Where's all the SK ammo?

I called Hirsch today to see if they had any SK long range match. As expected they had none and would not offer any opinion on when there might be some coming in. Lapua is focusing its efforts elsewhere, perhaps the Ukrainian war?
I did manage to get my name on a waiting list though. There are some 1400 people ahead of me. Imagine if I had waited!

Yep. Explains why for reloading components 170 gn lock-base .308 has pretty much disappeared from over here sales/existance.
Last two years. Poof...gone!

Prior to this horrid adventure, was pretty much the, go to sniper ammo most of Europe.

The reason why rimfire ammo like SK is unavailable isn't because of the Russia-Ukraine war. It's because the demand for rimfire ammo -- entry level and match -- currently outstrips production capacity. Now it's not only RFBR, ISSF, and enthusiasts of both kinds who are buying the better ammos, but PRS-style shooter numbers have grown tremendously. They weren't there a half-dozen or so years ago. In recent years, far more .22LR shooters are using ammo made by the big three ammo makers than ever before.

If that's the case, it's a good problem to have. I'd rather have plenty of interest in rimfire shooting than have it dying a slow death like the rural clay-shooting crowd is seeing.

Still bloody annoying when you're trying to find ammo though.

I know a few people that are shooting rimfire now because it is less expensive than centerfire

Amen to that! I'll shoot 100+ rounds of 22lr ($15-$20) each outing at the range, just for the practice.

I'd not want to spend $50+ (or more!) to shoot the same number of centerfield rounds.

Cheers,
Marlin989

That's always been true.

More people are shooting "better" .22LR ammo now than ever before. There's been an explosion of interest in PRS-style (and long range) .22LR shooting that simply wasn't there about six years ago.

shooting volume too
a brick of plinking ammo used to last a couple seasons of casual adult fun
started prs-type this spring, just picked up bricks #5,6&7

Just at a rural gun shop and noticed a variety of some rimfire ammo. I picked up two bricks of SK Rifle match, two bricks of Eley club and a brick of RWS Special match. The prices were obviously from a while ago. SK was $99, Eley $95 and the RWS $149, plus the tax. So I suggest looking at the hole in the wall shops. He had all kinds of CCI Standad for $60 and RWS Rifle Match(yellow box) $129 plus all the other CCI varieties. Get it where and while you can. I also managed to secure a good amount from another dealer of Eley Semi Auto Benchrest. Enough to keep me competing for a couple years. I hope it doesn’t get worse but I think it’s gonna happen!

As mentioned we are the only authorized importer and distributor for Lapua - SK - VihtaVuori.

North Sylva brings in grey market from EUR dealers who are breaking agreement conditions.

We have recently received positive news on shipments which have been held up due to the war, which is demanding of VihtaVuori.

That's all we can say for now.

Regards,

Peter

It's curious when a vendor can go through all the extra workarounds and hurdles, and ultimately provide a lower cost to the end customer, compared to the official channels. It begs the question what value the official channels offer to customers.

adamg:

The grey-market types do not provide lower prices according to major, perhaps the largest rimfire dealer, TESRO as well as other dealers.

Peter

I checked with Tesro about the SK availability. I was told they are expecting a shipment in the fall. So any time now, I guess!

Been waiting 2-3 years. Cabelas for instance has good stocks of Eley, but the store here got about 5 boxes of a lesser version of SK last year and that was it.

All the various web stores actually list prices anybody can see and compare. It allows us to do this thing called shopping. As much as you'd like to have a monopoly on the market, that would only benefit you.
