Expected velocity loss and effective range for 338 WinMag out of a 20 inch barrel?

Every bigger bore rifle I have shortened has been about 25’ per inch. I have done quite a few, usually pretty close to that.
 
I am not sure that you will ever know, unless you fire a few from your rifle and chronograph them BEFORE you cut off the barrel - and then compare to what you get after. No real good reason to believe you will get factory advertised velocity from your rifle to start with.
 
Friend just texted me this from a deer today.

“I wasn’t too impressed with the ELD-X. 50 yard shot. It seemed to explode on impact“
