I just finished the first stage of my 870 conversion from sporting to more of a tactical set up.

Any suggestions on an basic, meaning affordable/mid range, red dot (picatinny rail mount) optic?

Thanks in advance.

Had a Burris FFII on a turkey getter for a while and it was solid. However, a unit with wake feature and extended battery life is smart. With the FFII, I was always afraid of losing power just as Gobbles was showing up.

Eotechs are kind of ridiculous expensive but the dot for slugs and the circle is cool for when using shot.

Exactly that.

I used to shoot 3 gun with a single dot RDS on my shotgun, but struggled for some time because I was taking too much time to aim rather than point.

Switching to an EOTech with dot and ring reminds me that <surprise!> I have a pattern to work with.

Has anyone had luck with the $50-ish A-zon ones ? I've got a couple on 22s and they're OK for that, but haven't stuck one on a SG.

Scatter Gun
You’re gonna shoot bird shot and OO.
Do ya think a red dot is needed.
Slugs ya it would help.
A tactical flashlight that can focus the beam may be better.
Ya it’s your gun and $

Red dots and bird/buckshot work just fine, the grouse don’t know the difference.

I don't have optics on my shotguns so I'm happy to be corrected but, I believe they'd work just fine for static targets, but on dynamic targets I just don't think they'd work.

Birds on the wing or clays, I use my front (pump hand) thumb to lead the bird. From my eyes perspective the thumb is in between the front bead and the bird (or clay). It's how I was taught to lead and it works every time if I do my part. With a red dot, I'm happy to understand the dot replaces where the bead would be, but how do i see my thumb? Won't the red dot housing get in the way of that sight picture?

Said another way, I don't believe red dots can be used to lead a target that's moving, and that's a big problem for a fowler.
