Chiappa Little badger 243 /410 barrel blows off ..... any thoughts advice

Hey so just bought this 2nd hand. Seller said 5 shots down each tube . Went to put on paper today

2 hornady factory ammo configurations . 50 yards . 3 shot groups . 2nd volley or 1st volley of the 90 gr barrel goes flying.

Casing cut in 2. Retrieved smaller primer side piece like normal. Fished out front bottle neck with a bore brush .

Nothing seems broke and reinserted barrel .

No threads into receiver. Rifle barrel front sight / band slides over the 410 barrel. Receiver side of barrel is simply cut 1/2 around its circumference. But looking closer now ..... discoloration on receiver side of barrel 3/8” as seems to be needing pounded in more till flush with breech ...... Na seems tight with the casing against the wall using a fired casing ..... and barrel doesn’t wanna seem to Go in anymore ..... not gonna get violent till a GS looks

Typical too hot to trot hornady factory ammo ?? Probably the culprit ?

Any advice / experts on this be appreciated. Might run out to my GS eventually. And load mild loads for it eventually ..... think I know what happened. Barrel wasn’t seated all the way. Hence the discoloration where the blueing starts and where it’s supposed to be , casing blows backwards and bullet goes forward cutting it
, will pound in more secure till blue / black line is flush with receiver ...... oops. Kinda repeated myself there

Anyone want 35 rounds of factory lol. 75 and 90 gr Hornady lol

Chiappa little badger shooting 410 and 243? I can't say Im familiar with that, the little badger is typically a rimfire rifle??

Are you talking about a double barrel combination gun?

They make 4 or 5 'Double Badgers'. O/U folders

OP I doubt it was the ammo. 243 Win in the bullet weights you specify should all be around 3000 - 3200 fps. The Hornady Superperformance Varmint 75 states 1-200 fps faster than standard ammo, but I doubt that is the issue.

Press fit barrel, no epoxy, no grub screw? Interesting and a bit scary.

That makes more sense. I see they make a 243/410 Double Badger, must be what hes talking about.


OP this sounds like a bigger issue than "hot hornady ammo". Frankly I'd be suspicious about whether this had already happened to the previous owner, not that you'll ever know...

Pictures would really help.
 
I looked at a photo of this model Double Badger and can’t see how the barrels are fixed to the receiver. So the .410 barrel stayed put and the .243 jettisoned? I wonder what the 5 rounds were that the seller sent down the pipe?

I've alway's been interested in these chiappa 243/410 but questioned the strength of it for a high pressure round like this.
I have a double badger 22/410 and have been really enjoying it for grouse with the kids.

Yeah idk. I’m not the most articulate lol.

Basically barrel flew off 15 ish feet forward and casing split completely in 2. Previously fired one has signs of stretching / marked with a ring as well..... the 90 gr loads

Fired 3 -75 gr before that no issues , just horrible accuracy

Yes. That’s a good way to say it. Press fit barrel ..... nothing seems wrong. Just that the blueing line On barrel isn’t all the way to the block / receiver

Yea. Thinking too. I’m gonna take time GS before firing.
PM me your phone number idk how to post pics really. But the guns together again . Only thing really to show is the press fit barrel / chamber and the blueing line on barrel not all the way into receiver / block whatever it’s called

Friends don't let friends buy chiappa. How does the extractor groove compare to a factory unfired round? Hard to see in pics but it looks stretched out as if there was issues before firing. I doubt that is ammo related. That's just typical chiappa

Yeah you can see the remains of the solder on the barrel where it meets the receiver.
Pretty lame way to attach a barrel to a receiver...
