Hunting oppurtunies on the East Coast

I have been told that this is my last year in Alberta, & it looks like I am off to the East Coast next spring (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Newfoundland).

Can I expect the same hunting oppurtunities out there as I have enjoyed here?

It's a gimme that NFLD is renown for moose / caribou, and New Brunswick has more bears than people..but what about deer, gophers, and coyotes?

Sorry, no deer or gophers in NL. Lot's of other stuff though. Turrs are open now, thats a good laugh, seals in the spring, partridge, grouse, rabbits, ducks, geese, bear, moose, caribou, and coyotes.
 
No gophers in NS either, deer, black bear, coyotes, rabbits, ruffed grouse and ring-necked pheasant and lots of waterfowl.

Not here in NB anyways. The very best hunting in Canada is out west.

Not near as many deer here and most are smaller, and moose hunting is by draw only. Many go w/o moose tags for years. Been since 1988 for me.

Lots of black bear, spring and fall, but locals don't bother much.

Grouse and woodcock are fairly good as are rabbits. No wild pheasant here.

Lots of coyotes and good waterfowl including sea duck hunting on the Bay of Fundy.

Where are you moving to out here?

I submit that all of us westerners should observe a minute of silence in honour of hakx. :) A brother has departed us. :(

BTW, if someone told me it was my last minute in AB, they would be squatiing with their nuts in hand.
 
There are many things about the Maritimes that makes it a very good place to live, it's just the big game hunting is not as good as you would be used to in the west.

2 years ago I bought a fully treed, 1.4acre, corner building lot in a nice subdivision within 8k of the city for $30K. Try that out west. A very nice house can be had here for under $300K. Low crime, slower paced living, nice folk, no inner city gang stuff, and good jobs if you move to the right place. There is a bit of a boom going on here in SJ with a second reactor and refurbishment of the first, a huge LNG project, and a second refinery to be built here in the near future.

As much as I like a nice chunk of Alberta beef after a day of "chuck & duck" from a drift boat on the "Blue Ribbon Bow" ( or a handful of other S.AB rivers)
or maybe an afternoon Hun shoot, there's something pretty nice about a fresh scallop and/or lobster dinner after a day of grouse/woodcock hunting, or swinging a big fly for Atlantics on one of the east coast rivers.

You'll be O.K. out there, just go with the flow !

Almost all of the beef sold here in the big chains comes from Alberta.

I choose the east coast largely for the real estate points the Supercub pointed out.

I am hoping for St John's NFLD, or Gander NFLD. I would rather have moose and lobsters anytime over steak and lobster.

Any transfer that keeps you out of the big cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal) and away from Oddawa, is a good one. :rolleyes:

In my opinion if he is moving to newf he is moving on to a much better place! (as close to heaven as i've ever been) Friendlier people that don't drive with their heads up their arses!
 
hmmmm. I have found good people from coast to coast to coast. Some of them even live in the aforementioned big cities.

And I have met Newfoundlanders who were dip####s, just like everyplace else. Where a person LIVES is not nearly as important as what a person DOES.

Well said Doug! Of course, down here on the Rock, we've been sending most of the riff-raff out West!:D;)

Seriously though, in terms of land/house prices, once you go outside the larger cities you won't belive how cheap prices are. No problem picking up a two-story salt-box type house on 3-4 acres of land in the $20,000-$40,000 range, depending on location and age/condition of the house. Sure, you'll need to do some renovations, especially on the older homes, but where else are you going to find those prices, with an unimpeded view of the Atlantic Ocean? Of course, since those movies "The Shipping News" & mini-series "Random Passage" Americans and mainlanders have been coming here and buying up property like crazy. Definitely causing prices to rise.

Can't beat the quality of life though. I can actually hunt off my back deck if I wanted to! I can usually fill my Moose tag within a 10 minute drive via ATV from my house. Catch a meal of brook trout 2 minutes away in the pond back of my place. Also full of ducks! On the barrens above it, there are partridge for the taking and we get the odd carbiou wandering into the garden. Gotta' love it, sure beats the hell out of bumper to bumper traffic, SMOG, and the constant noise pollution of the cities.

if the inflow of calgarians gets too much for me you might have a new neighbour.

I'd like to add to Doug's comments, and my experiance
has been much the same.... not so much where
you live, or even what you do ... but who you are, as
a person in the first place. I've travelled extensively, coast
to coast, down into the States and into the Caribbean.
The east coast & the prairies are both memorable for
their inhabitants friendliness & hospitality !

OK I am waiting for the guy who cut meat for twenty years to make a meaningful reply about deer size.............;) He just might have an idea about deer body size.......
