2008 Rem 700 Triangle barrel Pic's & spec's

I played around with one today. The store I was at has both calibers.
Just seemed like any other 700...... just with a triangle barrel. I did notice that the barrel seems to be set low in the stock.

seeing as youre probably the first CGNer to own one, you are obligated to provide a range report :)

if anything, i look forward to a drop in used 700 prices as mall ninjas and sofa-SEALs everywhere sell their old, sadly outdated, non-tactical round-barreled Remmy 700s :)
maybe now youll be able to get a Remmy 700 on the EE for less than $200 over retail.

LOL ....... The fondlers will love it, but will have to sell a few zombie guns to finance the purchase. Watch the EE for nearly new, short bbl shotguns in the next while. :runaway:

Zing! After we get the used 700 prices out of the clouds we can work on the used Norinco 1911's. :runaway:

Well I had 4 Remmy 700's laid out before me today at the store all in 22 centerfire calibers. The cheapest was an SPS in 223 and the most expensive was a Remmy factory custom 700 in 204 Ruger with a factory fitted aftermarket stock. All different configurations from heavy barrel to thumbholes, nothing really caught my eye but I was really impressed with the way the VTR balanced..... so I bought one.

No range report for awhile yet, I need to get some glass for it.

I'm quite skeptical since I'm a HUGE Savage fan. If it doesn't shoot well off the start I'll wrap it around a tree and it will have been the first and last Remmy I ever buy. Then I'll use the action to build a custom gun from.

bah, no tree...
after you shoot a few hundred rounds and scuff the finish a bit, put it up on the EE - you can make a couple hundred bucks on top of what you paid for it :dancingbanana:

I am totally unimpressed with remington right now. Quality control is in the gutter. Some of the worst factory barrels on the market. Guys are now buying remingtons just for the actions. Removing the barrel without even trying it. They are developing an new reputation for poor quality.

does it use the same bolt as the SPS series??

I just got the new Lebarons catalog and the price is good on this thing. More than the SPS but cheaper than the next step up. Problem is I can't stand the feel of the SPS bolt, the jewled bolt is just so much smoother. If the VTR uses the SPS bolt, This gun is not at all worth the $200 more than the SPS junk.

Altho...you can outfit an SPS with a decent scope for less than the entry price of a 700 with the jewlded bolt, the cheapest starting around the 800mark or so.

At $500 a Remington SPS is the perfect donor for an action with huge potential. Most Remmy actions usually need a fair amount of truing up, but then I was chatting with my gunsmith that was working with one of the new Savage F-class/benchrest single shot actions and he showed me how off-centre the firing pin was and how much truing up those needed too. By the time you buy a Savage action and then have it trued, you may as well have spent your money on a Barnard, Stiller, Surgeon or even Nesika.

Factory rifles are meant to shoot factory ammo by people whose only requirement is minute-of-deer accuracy anyway.

an SPS-V is $575
the VTR is $155 more.... thats a lot for just for 3 flutes and a 4" shorter barrel, and potentially worse accuracy due to the extra machining of the flutes and integral brake? meh
the only appeal in the SPS is that its an entry level Remington 700.

if youre going to spend nearly $800 you may as well just get the VLS and bypass the POS plastic stock entirely, or spend more money and move up to the VSSFs/Senderos which are a night/day difference from the entry level Remingtons.

Thats what I was leaning towards, the VLS. The sendaro doesn't fit me correctly something about the palm swell that makes it feel awkward.
