Which milsurp rifle for use as a light-ish hunting rifle?

The number 5 is lighter and it has a really good rubber recoil pad which it makes it very pleasant to shoot!

I never found the #5 to be a pleasant rifle to shoot, making the recoil pad smaller in area was a very odd choice.

that very pleasant rubber recoil pad of yours, is as hard as steel.

Maybe dig around in your purse, see if you have any Massengill or Vagisil in there. I hear if you apply it to the rubber it will soften it up.

All kidding aside, they some do get hard over time. They are over 75 years old. I`ve also seen them turn to a mushy gooey mess.

There are nice soft repros available. Or maybe get one of those slip on recoil pads if needed.

Yes, I tried to get some Vagisil, but it was all sold to a guy named Ax.338, he had an urgent need to soften the massiv recoil of his 25 pound taget rifle in .22 short.

my customized no1 mkIII types are much lighter than a no5 jungle carbine.
Scoped in a nice monte carlo stock with recoil pad I'd guess in the 8lb range which is a "light-ish" rifle in my opinion.
I should pull my latest one out and weigh it and see but I'd be surprised if it was much over 8lbs.
My ruger m77 mkII 7mm rem mag is over 10 pounds scoped and slinged and it's my go to , do- all rifle. I like to use my modernized , shorty no1 mkIII for the treestand or ground blind hunting and find it is a very handy and easy to carry rifle. It has a perfect center of balance and is one of my favorites for close quarter carry.

lol, You`re probably not going to find any large sanitary napkins either. I had to buy them all to put between my shoulder and the butt of that one to soften the bark of that beast.

And you used up all the tissues, to wipe your tears after all that pain!

The recoil pad IS actually quite effective IF you have one that hasn't attempted to change careers and become a hockey puck. Liberty Tree had a ton of them, brand new and properly preserved, and they're very soft when new. Too bad LT won't ship to Canada any more. As a comparison the LEC weighs a bit over 6 lbs, and has a metal butt plate.

Lol, mine changed careers years ago then. Never heard of them being soft.

Apparently they harden when exposed to oil or solvents. I've heard people recommend storing No 5's muzzle down to prevent oil and solvent running down the gun and on to the pad. I was quite surprised when the pads arrived, they were stored in a chalk like paste and surprisingly soft for being as old as they are.

I used a short Swedish Mauser with a scope mounted for a few hunts. Decent little shooter. The irons were off by miles but with the scope I dialed it in nicely
