Reading through plenty of these forums here and all I’m seeing is bashing of all the popular 5.56 modern sporting rifles that are non-restricted, popular and available. Looking for what all of your opinions of what the good stuff is.

We purchased a new house in October and have had a bunch of coyote problems. With a new puppy at home, I want to be able to take care of some of them over 200 yards as all I have that is not completely overkill is a 12 gauge shotgun. (It also helps that I’ve been wanting a semi auto 5.56 rifle and now have permission from the CFO to buy one to protect our little four legged buddy).

Price is definitely a concern as it always is but I’m willing to spend some money for something that’s not going to break as much as some of these firearms listed seem to.

Will be taking this to the range for fun of course but primarily will be getting this coyote problem under wraps.

22 Magnum will do the job. A 556/223 is basically a 22 (diameter), just longer and heavier, most are in 55 or 62 grains (that's the weight). A 22 magnum is usually 40 grains, a 22 lr long rifle is around 30. Look at velocity and drop of different calibers. But the 22 magnum has a lot more powder = higher velocity, flatter trajectory.

For 200+ yards on a coyote sized target I'd agree with the assessment that a bolt action .223 with a decent optic would put you in better stead than any of the current 5.56 semi's on the market.

You might get away with a Kel-Tec RDB variant, but I'd do some serious load work before laying crosshairs on a live target.

Also consider a Cz 512 Tactical in .22 WMR. Hot round, reputable gun, unlimited mag capacity...

Unfortually there isn't many affordable semi auto 223 that I'd recomend. I don't think it's legal to dispatch coyotes with a 22 in NS.

Plenty of bolt 223s though.

Make sure its safe to discharge a firearm in your area.

I would just get a Browning bar of any variety chambered in 243 winchester. It will kill coyotes, it will kill deer. It's far more versatile then the .223 or 5.56 which is small game only. Used you can find them close to $1000, new closer to $2000. Besides competition shooting I see no reason to own a .223 or 5.56 rifle when a 243 winchester is available in a Browning bar.

Probably can’t use .243 for coyotes outside big game season?

At least in Ontario, you can use any caliber as long it falls under a .275-calibre rifle. They are considered fur bearing so can't let the pelt go to waste. There are also slightly different rules for muzzleloaders in certain wmu's and some places require a tag. I don't know what the rules are for other provinces.

I would too if I could buy two firearms but I want to do two functions with one. I want a semi automatic mostly for having fun etc… but I get to use the coyotes as an excuse.

I have Savage semi in 22 magnum. Not very common here in Canada.

But if you are serious about the 556/223, get a Norinco type 97 3rd generation. They don't sell them new anymore but probably the most reliable semi in this caliber. They go for around 1,200, check out the EE, they pop up all the time. Very fun gun.

Semi-autos are going to be problematic with some CFOs in some provinces. We can't shoot our perfectly accurate modern sporting rifles at the range anymore. They're weapons of war, donchaknow? However, shooting on your own property is not the same as shooting at a range. You might have a perfectly valid reason to shoot whatever dangerous hardware you can afford.

That said, a bolt action is likely to be more accurate than a looser tolerance semi. With practice a 5.56 bolt gun, like a Ruger American could be just what you need. Work up a range table per shooting spot for likely coyote approach routes and get your holdovers. Load 'em up and git some!

Given that you have noted you'd prefer a semi, the SL8 is probably your best value for money - very accurate. Other affordable options would be a Type 97 gen 3. Going up from there in price would be a used pre-X95 Tavor, then used X95. Beyond that you go way up from there in price.

It all depends where you are. I am in southern Ontario, and pretty sure there is no caliber restrictions for coyote and the like.
Check the regs for your area.

Where can you find hi cap mags.. I've struck out for months with mine

What in the F are you talking about? If you have a pal you can buy any non restricted rifle you want.

I assume he means he got his PAL.

The H&K SL-8 is worth a look. They aren't considerably more expensive than the 180 variants, and people say they're the most accurate .223 semis they've shot. And quality will be decent by default. Ergos are a little (lot?) goofy, but if you're not competing with it or something it should be fine.
