Browning Trombone

I was recently given a Browning Trombone .22. It seems to be in decent shape and I’m in the process of deep cleaning it. The serial number is in the low 37000s. It has a rear peep sight mounted on the stock that appears original or at least had been on the rifle for a long time. The aperture in the peep sight is very small, but there appears to be a second wider sight with a bigger aperture screwed into the side of sight. I don’t see much on line about this sight. Am curious if this is a unique model or possibly an aftermarket installation.

Lyman did make a # 2 "Tang Peep Sight" for the Trombone. I know this because I have one on my rifle.
It has 2 mounting screws. One machine screw into back of recever & one in the wood. I got this gun in
1962 & have seen many rifles since but NONE with this peep sight. So ,,,,,, Yes,,,,, is rare.

Looks like a LYMAN #2 for a Winchester that is mounted backwards.

I wish I knew how to post pics here. My Tang Peep is NOT like any pictured here. It fits the
receaver properly & as I said ,,,,1 machine screw to receaver & 1 screw to wood. Made by Lyman
and stamped as such. Not factory installed.Certainly the sights pictured here with 2 wood screws are not made for
the Trombone.
 
This one was quite gummed up in places. Looking forward to re-assembling and taking to the range. FTF likely won’t be as big of an issue as my being able to line up the sights! Must have been made for younger eyes!

My first Trombone was in the early 50's when I was 11 or 12... it was used and very worn but it shot well and functioned perfectly with .22 LR HP Whiz-Bangs. I shot a lot of gophers with it... out shot a friend consistently who had a Cooey bolt action repeater... it was always jamming or mis-feeding. Don't remember what happened to my Trombone. Absolutely a great model.
 
It's not original to the rifle nor is the jeweled bolt face nor the screw holes in the side of the receiver. It also looks to have been refinished but it's still a very, very nice rifle.

YES ,,,,,,,, you are correct , my gun with the Lyman peep sight is refinished , with bolt jeweled , & I installed that peep from another Trombone.
I did that because this rifle I got in 1963 as my 2 nd. gun ever & wanted the sight there. Regardless we have a rare Lyman sight , fitted properly.

Would definitely draw sum serious attention at a shewt-out at the range.

Curious to know what wuzz attached to those two side mount receiver screws?
