I have been on Google trying to figure this out. Maybe someone here can make it clear for me. I have a sks rechambered in 6.5 Grendel. Can I instal a hical ar mag adapter and run 10 Rd 7.62x39 pistol mags? Can I put the 6.5 Grendel rounds in the 7.62x39 magazine and run it legally? Thanks guys

As with any magazine, and this knowledge has been floating around Canada for a very long time now, the magazine is legal for what it was originally designed for. Nothing has changed.

It is irrelevant how many rounds of Grendel fit into the pinned stock SKS magazine. The stock SKS magazine is legal when pinned to accept 5 rounds of 762x39.

The notion of a modern, accurate round like the 65 Grendel in an outdated POS like the SKS baffles me.

The real question is if 6.5 Grendel will run in a 7.62x39 magazine. I've had pretty inconsistent results but that was not with a SKS. But legally? Sure.

6.5 Grendel runs no problem out of a stock sks magazine. It was a fun project to do. It was low budget. Bought a Chinese sks for $200, an old 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser barrel for $80, and a sks dragunov stock for $80.

I think what is being alluded to is that the body taper on the 6.5 Grendel is different enough than on the 7.62x39 body, that a pistol mag for a 7.62x39 may or may not reliably feed a Grendel round.
I have had horrible luck with everything other than Grendel marked followers and mags.

That’s what I’m talking about too. Grendel AR mags work fine, x39 not so good and I think would only hold 7 Grendel rounds anyway

From what I've read in some stateside forums Grendel in a x39 mag (ak-style, can't really speak to the AR patterns) is fine as long as you keep it at 10 rounds or under, after which the taper really starts to matter. So the 5 rounds up here should be fine.

The 7.62x39 pistol mag will hold 10 rounds of 6.5 grendel. I don't know how to will feed. The hi cal magazine adapter looks like it kinda holds the magazine on an angle.

To clarify a bit...

Hi Cal magazine adapter is great, I have extensive experience with them on 3 different SKS, but always using x39 ammo in x39 AR pistol magazines.

I've also used the same x39 AR pistol magazines with a 6.5 Grendel in a 6.5 Grendel AR rifle and they were very inconsistent. It was some time ago but IIRC if I loaded more than about 7 rounds it wouldn't feed well. And even with 7 rounds it was inconsistent. Whereas Grendel magazines were 100%- but only hold 5 rounds.

So perhaps the same thing was happening to me, but on a smaller capacity scale as they were 10 round magazines? I'm not sure. (Also I never tried AK mags)

Ok I going to go ahead with the mag adapter install. And run 6.5 Grendel mags if I have too. It's kinda a pain to load the Sks with the shell deflector and the stock magazine. Thanks for the input everyone. This has been a fun project to play with. Even if it's not very accurate. I usually only shot 100 yards anyway. Once in a while I get to a spot I can shoot 300 yards

My Refurbished multi thousand round SKS with a questionable crown will often put 5 rounds into 3moa

In calm conditions it will put 4-5/5 rounds on a torso plate at 500yards. Evidently ive made many modifications to it, however its still 7.62x39 and the factory barrel. So im sure your 6.5 Grendel build could easily yeild something more capable then it !

Murray 3-d. Saw your videos on YouTube. Great job. And entertaining to watch. And good accuracy with it too. It's all about reasonable expectations nothing wrong at all with 3moa. I think 3 moa is great. Sometimes I get 2 Moa but usually 3 with Barnaul 100 grain 6.5 Grendel. I would say I am an average shot someone skilled could probably do better with the rifle

nice, 6.5 Grendel is a sweet cartridge; i wish we had more next-gen cartridges and firearm offerings here. Imagine if someone made that modernized "Unicorn SKS" in 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC, i'd definitely drop 3 grand on one. And i don't mean as a precision long-range rifle, i mean general "infantry rifle" style

I got the mag installed looks pretty cool. Hopefully get out soon see how it runs.

I built it to be like a dragunov. 421superduty I want to build another in 6mm arc in an infantry style set up. But with the current state of attack on firearm owners I don't want to invest the time or money. I also have daydreams of building a type 97 in 6 or 6.5. Also be fun to build an sks in 9.3x39 and make it look like a VSS Vintorez.
