Lockhart Tactical .556 Build Kits

Hey has anyone had experience with the Lockhart Tactical .556 Build kit? It consists of the lower and bolt carrier etc. My local gun shop is pushing them as an alternative to use some of the parts from an existing prohib AR 15 and install into their lower to make the rifle legal again.

Has anyone tried this product out etc?? They have them on sale for $1247 right now. Be nice to be able to use my rifle again...
 
A friend bought a kit from TNA, it came with the upper, lower, 20"barrel(with gas block and gas tube), bolt carrier and small parts. He was able to use his ar parts to assemble the rifle, BUT, it didn't work with the gas aperture and he had to use some advice from Bartok to reopen the gas port for 1/8". Since he did it, I saw him put more them 400 rounds of 223 and 556 with no issues at at all. Another thing, he bought the Lockhart adjustable gas block and the gas key - the kit didn't come with a gas key.

The original gas port of his rifle-length barrel was not able to provide enough push to feed the next round, extraction was always perfect though.

These kits use your existing barrel, buffer tube,trigger group etc.

There is no "Making the rifle legal again" or any implication that your AR is rising from the ashes of C-21 to be legal - just in case anyone is getting any ideas that this isn't completely above board.

You would be stripping the AR back to its basic parts and re-using most of them less:
- the upper and lower receivers,
- the bolt carrier,
- charging handle,
- Receiver pins,
and possibly the bolt hold open and magazine release (depending on which version of the Raven you get).

I believe there are a couple of different iterations that you can get, but I believe the basic kit contents contain:
- brand new upper and lower receiver,
- bolt carrier,
- bolt carrier charging handle stud that threads into the bolt carrier,
- take down pins

I bought the "Platinum kit" that included the ambi bolt hold open and mag release that are both proprietary.

You end up with a new rifle (albeit with new or used parts, depending on how and what you built it with).

My build went smoothly with the exception of two areas:

- The buffer tube threads were undersized and needed to be chased / re-threaded, and
- the cerecoating on the receivers meant my trigger pins were extremely tight and needed some finesse to get in.

I saw a fella going through this trouble shooting at the range on Saturday. He was not having a fun time.
 
The kit is lower receiver only with BCG,just add my bolt head, trigger group,barrel,buffer tube etc.. Interesting no one else has seen this kit for sale..
 
Only the lower? It is not compatible with a AR upper and even if you could use your AR upper, it should be prohibited. Sorry if I didn’t understand ehat you said.
 
for the price of the receiver kit you might as well just spend a little more and get the whole rifle. save your parts for something else or as spares for the complete rifle.

Ya this sounds more realistic. Not sure if the salesperson misunderstood the concept of the kit and I didn't spend much time looking at it. I was already on the way out the door when he stopped me and tried to sell me on the idea.

your salesperson should not be on the sales floor if they don't know the basics about ARs being prohibited and the Raven being a completely different firearm.

They are no different than a proprietary receiver like the ATRS Modern Sporter or Maccabee SLR, although I haven't handled one in person to confirm build quality and finishing in comparison to the ATRS.

Should take all AR parts except for the few proprietary parts THAT SHOULD come with the kit (upper, lower, bolt carrier,etc)
The purpose of this kit is to allow people that have previously legal firearms, that are now prohibited to have a second home and reuse those parts.
MRA renegade and AR180 builder kits had a similar idea too.

Some people had custom built ARs which were worth well over 2500$ in components, plus the receivers. These kits are marketed to those people.
If you do not have a donor rifle, do not buy a kit, it will be cheaper for you to source a complete built rifle, unless of course you want very specific components for you build that you will source by yourself.

It seems to me that you store bought the Raven kits purely to move their old AR parts inventory to stick them on unsuspecting buyers as a 'look at this cool project you can make' aspect.

Yes, I just went to the Lockhart website and looked at the Raven platform. Hadn't seen it prior so now I understand what is entailed in building it up with parts from an AR. With that said, might as well just buy a Raven already built and save the hassle really with the price of just the receiver being near $1300 and a complete rifle only another $500-$600 or so more.
