BLR rifle opinions??

They are accurate but wouldn’t setup that well for long range work imo. The triggers are good for a lever, the lock time is slow so are in a different league compared to a bolt gun. The magazine is a nice feature. Browning generally makes really good guns.
 
Yes, they will hang in there to extended ranges, you will find 1-1.5 moa pretty easily. Putting that into perspective, 500 y = 7.5” group , will reliably knock down game if you can get it there.

Triggers are ok, I think 5lb is an average I’ve felt

They may be about the best lever for the task of medium range shots, but won’t keep up with a bolt gun.

There are .308, 7-08, .300wsm and .284 out there to be had. In order from ok - best choice for the task.
 
From what I gather they are lightweight and have light barrel profiles so they throw the 3rd shot wild a bit. Good 2 shot groups lol.
I got given one in 308 and had a hard time getting on paper at 100m. Im blaming the cheap ammo and warm barrel but I’ve also herd they like heavy for caliber weights. So im going to try some 165 and 175gr ammo and see if it does better.
Philosophy of use seems to be light weight bush gun that can manage near bolt gun accuracy for 1-2 shots. If you need a 3rd shot you probably need more practice.
 
Owned quite a few over the years.

Someone mentioned 5 pound trigger and that is a fact.

All I owned would shoot 1/2 MOA with the right hand load. Just hard to keep that accuracy with that heavy trigger pull!

Great guns.

Last one in 270 I owned went to my nephew and it’s a great shooting gun.
 
I have a lightweight short action with pistol grip in 7mm-08. It's smooth and carries well but it is not a bench rifle for sure.

As other mentioned before I too had a hard time to get it shoot well with factory ammo. Tried 4 different factory loads from 140-160 grains and got maybe 2.5 moa.

I tuned a handload with 120 grain TTSX which it likes way better. I can get 1 moa 3 shot groups now if I let the barrel cool in between shots. The trigger is OK on mine it smoothed out quite a bit over time...
 
good quality hunting rifle if you like a lever not sure where this throwing the 3 rd shot group comes from i have a pre 81 308 and a post 81 7mm08 and i have shot many 3 shot groups that can be cover with a 25 cent piece

Apparently, changing the sear spring is a way to do trigger work on the BLR without messing up the gears. I've not been brave enough to try it yet ...

 
I have a 70’s BLR in 308 that I inherited from my father.
Great handy rifle . Use it for deer and a general hunt camp/ cottage gun. But with 150 grain factory loads, I can’t do better than 3” groups at 100 yds.

That accuracy is definitely not normal for these rifles. Something is amiss there..
 
Have owned 3 in the past. None now. All in .308 Win. First two with the stick out mag; last one had the flush mag.

Ok rifles but for some reason could never warm up to them enough to keep any of them.

These days for a lever in .308 Win I favour a 1958 mfg Savage 99F.

Had a .308 takedown model
Great gun, very accurate and light.
Loved the iron sights.
Never #### it beyond two hundred yards mind you.

When the lever action craze happened I ended up selling it for much more than I paid and upgraded to a 500 S&W mag lever gun.. now I’ll have to start harvesting my deer and bear with this one.

The BLR accounted for half dozen bear and 4 mule deer itself.


Might be the only gun I regret selling even a little bit.
 
I've owned a couple , one in 308 and another in 358 . Overall , they're really good rifles and are a solid and reliable gun for most hunting conditions . I never used mine on game past about 200 yards , so I can't offer an opinion on long range hunting with one . I do , however , own a number of bolt guns that are far more capable of long range accuracy . I'm not saying that a BLR won't do it , but there are better designs out there for shooting at animals past 300 yards .
