338 Federal!

Alright I took the bait. I just cracked out my calipers and measured the Tikka's mag. It's good for 2.834. All I want is 225 for maximum weight for mine. How fast you figure to get a 250 clipping along?

Seeing how they're using a longish action for the T3, you'd think they'd make that COL a little longer for the bigger bullets....:runaway:

here is a 215 grain Sierra GameKing loaded in a dummy round to 2.925" OAL, sitting in a Sako 75 magazine

I assume the 85 will have an almost identical length magazine, so assuming this length wont hit the lands, it certainly looks like I will be able to gain some powder capacity a bit

Hey Tod,

Great choice...I think you'll find the .338 Federal does fine with a 210 or 225 grainer. It's likely all you'll need.

Jeff/1911.

the rifle showed up today, but the Optiloks werent shipped..must be out of stock :( I might go out and shoot it over the chrony with no scope just for the heck of it :D

just found a scope Amphibious left at my house :D I will go pick up some Leupold mounts for the time being at hit the range after lunch :dancingbanana:

Nice looking rig, too bad though. Any bullet doing less than 3000fps will just bounce off of deer, elk, moose and bears don't you know. You should probably trade it off for an Ultra Mag.........

chrony results - 2670 f/s average for 3 shots of factory Fusion 200 gr load (rated @ 2660 f/s)

handloads - 200 grain Hornady Interlock over 45 & 46 grains H4895 = 2510 f/s & 2585 f/s avg for 3 shots

accuracy with the handloads went like this :

.91" & .80" @ 100 yards shot from prone with front & rear rests

the thing kicks like a 280 :)

Now that you've got it ... had you considered the 370 Sako Mag ???
.366-'o6 - hits harder, shoots just as flat out to 300.
Federal loadings of 286 gr. Partitions & TSX's.

I would consider it if someone would offer me one for less than a grand :) and I could find dies and brass/ammo easily - for now, the 338F will work fine

Always the problem with new stuff ... as to survival - time will tell.

Glad to see you're under an inch right off the hop with the handloads. :D
RL-15, Varget or H335 next with some Accubonds ?
