7.62x39 bolt gun which one?

If you get a Ruger in 7.62x39, I recommend not to do the conversion to AK magazines. The 10 round XCR magazines will not sit properly. You can see it also on youtube. That's why Ruger is selling it with the customer having to agree to a "sold as is". They are almost impossible to get now anyways since Gravel Agency is no longer selling to retail customers.

I bought the Ruger when I thought I might have five figures worth of surplus x39 ammo and no “legal” way shoot it. That was a pretty big motivator. The foray into reloading for it came about through mere curiosity as to how a custom loading would compare to Chinese or Warsaw Pact ammo. There’s zero logic in this endeavour. It’s like racing a Volkswagon Beetle. It’s just fun.

Gotcha.

I forgot how ridiculous the laws have become up in Canada.

Given that it's an intermediate length cartridge designed for use with constrained assault rifle mag lengths, it's a pretty peculiar choice for a bolt gun.

It's handicapped ballistically, reloading support is not great (crap brass quality), and can't really do anything more optimal boltgun cartridges could do.

Starline brass at $38 per 50 or so when I was buying it is pretty good. And there are some great new bullets on the market for it. Nosler 123 gr E-tips, Barnes 123gr TSX, etc. And good 308 cal bullets for the 300 BLK and 30-30 that really get the most out of it.

At the same time you can take advantage of great cheap practice/training ammo.

Heck, to me its a question of why shouldn't I have a bolt gun in 7.62x39 and reload for it? Not like much of my hunting is really over 200 meters anyway. If it is I have a bigger rifle for that. The above mentioned bullets with a good powder like CFE BLK and a bolt gun get you sub MOA performance and work great on game.

With any of the aftermarket bottom metal with an internal mag for the Howas you can seat bullets like the 120gr Tac-Tx out long and get it going fast enough to do some really good work. In the Ruger American, I don't mind single loading them and having a mag full of whatever as backup.

I was lucky. When I bought my 9" Bren, it came with 300 rounds of Winchester white box brass cased FMJ. It isn't Lapua, but I'm getting lots of mileage from it. Best part: small rifle primer baby!

Heck yeah. Between that small primer pocket and overall low pressure of the round I bet that brass lives about forever lol.

Wish I could find small primer pocket 7.62! Mine is all large primer, including WWB ammo. But oh well!

There's definitely good brass out there. Maybe I'll just have to see how Lapua does lol.

Friggin shame those !(&R*!@Y^(!# made it so you can't hunt with the Bren, would love to see how some of this stuff did on deer

If you are hunting,
Ruger Ranch is excellent - I have one. Shoots same hole spreads all day with hunting ammo not cheap crap
Howa Mini-action in walnut is a great rifle. My camp buddy has one.
CZ is overpriced if you are just hunting deer.

Huh. Funny, i just bought 3 from Gravel and my x39 feeds flawlessly from ASC mags. My buddy converted his and it also works just fine.

I had to provide SN for the rifle in order to get it. I suspect that the mags I had did not work properly because of the tension in the spring, could have removed one round of the spring but called it quits since I am more fond of the BCL Bison I have. I am half blind, so MOA does not matter to me. The 5/20 mags worked fine though. Next time I would rather buy some Mini 30 magazines.

Yes, Gravel announced a couple weeks ago that they will not sell to private parties anymore. You must have given them so much headache, lol.

VERY slow working company.

It looks as if the Cz alpha 600 is about on par with the Ruger American ranch?

I just googled and saw the CZ alpha x39 for $870. Much closer in price than the last time i looked at that platform. Worth a look for that money.

Not serious, LOL
Had to show it though.

Should have a removeable block, magazine is the most heavily engineered concept on any bolt action. M43 rounds are considerably shorter than 6.5 MS, can be troublesome feeding occasionally

Damn, again nothing about assault rifle it was designed for. It looks like I will never find out about these mysterious "constrained assault rifle mag lengths" that cartridge was designed for. And I had such high hopes...

The point being made is that the 7.62x39 is what's called an "intermediate cartridge". It's shorter than other 7.62 cartridges, which gives it an advantage in weight and recoil, making it suitable for use in "assault rifles" like the AK-47 and SKS, while still having more power than traditional pistol rounds.

The downside to intermediate cartridges is they have less power and aren't as ballistically efficient to full-sized rifle cartridges, due to their constrained OAL and thus powder column.

The advantages of an intermediate cartridge don't really translate over into bolt action rifles, as you typically aren't constrained by COAL parameters in a bolt action rifle.

Obviously there may be niche reasons for wanting a 7.62x39 bolt gun - like if you live in a country where your other 7.62x39 rifles were banned by the government, but you still have a bunch of 7.62x39 you want to shoot.
