The Shotgun In Modern Combat - Drone Defense

Improvised drones and modern trench warfare, shotgun yes please. The only people who say a shotgun is useless are the ones who can't shoot them. Mostly young AR fan boys. They love their mouse fart recoil.

I can see a shotgun being effective against the once-famous drone with a mounted handgun, or in other words a drone set up by an amateur but against any professionally set up one that can operate almost out of sight- no way. And the trouble is that the technology is spreading fast.

If you have good concealment you might well bring down an ordinary camera drone sent in close to find you, but of course as soon as you do that your position immediately becomes known so run like hell.

There are quite a few drone footage videos iv seen from Ukraine where the Russians saw the drone and couldn't do much about it, there was also footage of some Ukrainians throwing sticks at a drone to knock it out of the air. A shotgun would probably help in these situations.

Shotguns seem like a somewhat better answer to these things. The drones are fragile so a pellet or two should still bring it down.

There was a UAF guy in another thread that had his squad test out shotguns with various types of ammo.

Overall it's only effective in ranges less than 100m. Anything more and the drone is not damaged enough.

Unfortunately most drones operate at 100+.

Well apparently the great minds at Army have decided that there is no combat use of the shotgun for Canada, not even for breaching.

Genius….

They can't stop them with dozens of 20mm and other autocannons. What would drastically less range and no payload offer?

There are systems available that are extremely effective and designed with drones in mind. These systems utilize a vast network of radars that Ukraine does not have and the west have been unwilling to send due to security reasons. The west does not want to send the weapons to defeat Russia but simply to bleed them and grind down their ability to wage conventional war….and this has greatly been accomplished. This war will end when the west wants it to. They are now slowly stem the supply of weapons and aid to Ukraine with the intent in winding this war down late next year.

I'm a little disappointed that the only 'combat' use for the shotgun in this thread turns out to be as an anti-drone device, lol.

I watched a headcam video of an advance to contact on a Russian trench system and then a route when the Russians counter attacked. Shotgun go-pro guy lost. In the last few seconds of the video he turns and fires several times at a Russian clearly visible before getting burned to the ground. The SG was an A12 I think.

See, this is what I'm talking about. You're sitting in the back of a pickup truck and a f..king Russian FPV is coming in hot. Would you rather shoot at it with your rifle, or like a Saiga for example?

Here, somehow the Ukrainian Soldier manages to shoot it, but wouldn't his job be easier if he had a shotgun?

Ukrainian soldier shoots at a russian FPV drone from the back of a pickup truck, and causes it to miss its target

Contrast the Ukrainian example, with a Russian one:

Here a Russian soldier shoots at a drone with an RPG but misses... then tosses the RPG in disappoint and disgust, and just walks away defeated...

I'm not sure what that has to do with my comment. You created some context that I wasn't including I think.

Garand Thumb and his cronies have fun making videos, and it shows. Was a riot to watch them thrashing on $2K shotguns.

The bayonet to the safety’s and mortaring on the table was glorious. And yeah the Turknelli, what the #### was that?!

Looked like it fired out of battery to me, I was surprised that they gave it another chance... Was fun to see my outhouse furnace (Big Buddy) in action too.

There is an interesting forbes article about drone air defence shortcomings. Apparently a Tunguska anti-aircraft gun takes between 4 and 13 thousand rounds to take down a small drone. Although well outside shotgun range I think

I wonder where all the misses land

According Fighting Shotguns, Vietnam era flechette rounds extended the kill range of a 12 Ga to about 120 yards. The darts hold energy longer and only spread to about a six foot pattern.
The extended range is why they are illegal here.
