8MM-06 & 8X64s hunting rifle projects/build >Update<

Update: Finally got out to try my 8mm-06. Put some loads together. 58 GR of RE-17 with 200gr Nosler accubond's and 200gr Speer's with the same charge. Quick load estimate of velocity is 2800 fps. Speers didnt group to well but the Nosler shows some promise. I'll be playing around with this load to tighten the group to 3/4-1".

I've been shooting an ugly old 8mm-06 98 since before Gwynn left Saskatchewan for Montana, so maybe 30 years or more. Whacked a few whitetail with handloads, mostly Sierra 150 grain and good old Higginson 47SB. Had it rechambered back then mostly because a good Indigenous friend was having one done and he convinced me to get one done as well. Those Sierra 150 gr. did the trick, with a well placed shot in the boiler room. Heart and lungs destroyed, with little or no meat loss.

Finally got to give my 8mm-06 a run for its money. Great outing covering about 20kms on the boots, seeing lots of game. 14 Sheep, 1 Goat, 29 does, and 4 Bucks, one which gave me a shot. 200 yards, shooting down a steep drainage. The buck was right on the tree line. A couple of 200gr Nosler accubonds did the job.

Really nice thread, really nice built, obviously nice shooting and a good looking buck that should yield great meat for the winter! If I can ask, how much a built like that put you back?
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers
David

I could not help but notice the velocity - more or less 2,800 fps. I found three similar - 165 HotCor in 308 Win, 150 Partition in 7x57 and 225 Accubond in 338 Win Mag - I think the loads are in various Speer and/or Nosler manuals. As measured on my Shooting Chrony. Seems to me "sight-in" to be on at 200 yards, then minus 9" at 300, minus 2 feet at 400 and minus four feet at 500 with those bullets, and similar, I am sure. All maintain that 1,800 fps and 1,000 ft/lbs well past those ranges. I have taken many deer with the first two loadings, but none further than 300 yards. I have never taken any game, yet, with that 338 Win Mag load.

I finally found a 8x64s Lothar Walther barrel blank 26" in length. Im debating what action to use for this build.

I have the ability to use the following.

CZ 550- either use original stock or bell and carlson synthetic- timney trigger.
Brno ZKK 600
Husqvrna FN98 -will have a timney trigger/ not sure on the stock for the 98. Still looking for a bolt shroud with a 3 position wing safety.

Any thoughts or advice on this next build?

Very nice rifle OP. Do you happen to know off hand if the barrel had to be set back for the 8mm06 reamer to completely clean up the 8x57 chamber?

I have my father's 8mm-06 that was a K98 Mauser that was reamed out. It was an absolute deer slayer with Nosler Partitions that my dad had reloaded for him.

Agree 100%. I don't have an 8mm, but a 338-06...apples and opples, close enough. With 210gr Partition's going 2700 fps, things just tip over.

Very nice build DGRADINARU, the groups look good, now for the fine tuning!

I don't know how I have missed this thread for three years??? Nice rifle Daniel... as you know, my son and I shoot 7X64 Brenneke's, mine is a Ruger M77-RS Mark II and he is shooting a CZ 550 LUX, so I feel a kinship for your 8X64 project. Of your available actions, I would probably use the 550... should be a terrific hunting rig on game, close to perfect bear rifle... I look forward to reading about your progress.

Hey Daniel: Interesting work you are doing! I had a Czech refurb 98 re-chambered years ago a gunsmith in Regina. He moved to Montana later. I used that old rifle for whitetail hunting for a good many years. I used 30-06 brass, didn't have much for tools back then, but the rifle got the job done. I still have it and do take it out once in a while, for old time's sake.

Good luck with your project. We met in Merritt in the Fall at the Walmart parking lot. Take care.

I dont recall but im pretty sure a 8mm-06 reamer will clean out a 8x57 without needing set back.

Husqvarna with a mcmillan or wildcat

That sounds interesting. I'll have to look into the wildcat stock offerings abit more. Dont know much about them.

This was my first thought, the 550 has more room in the magazine for the longer round. Still on the fence though. I'll keep you all posted on progress!
