SKS noobie ammo question

I just got my SKS type 56 and I'm really excited to go shoot it, once my ammo arrives. It is covered in gunk, I guess it's cosmoline? It's all over the wood stock as well.

I was reading somewhere to get rid of the cosmo you disassemble the gun and put it in brake cleaner, then dry it off, oil it lightly and put it back together. How do I get rid of the waxy crap on the stock?

What's up with the flip up sights? How do they work? I have shot both open sights and scoped many times but never with this type of sight, it doesn't make sense to me...

Also pardon my ignorance with this gun, but how do you close the bolt forward when you have pulled it back and there is no ammo in the magazine? It stays in the open position no matter what I do. Have tried playing with the safety, holding down the trigger than pulling back the bolt a little further in th e hopes it goes forward, etc. I only have a ruger 10-22 as far as semi-auto rifles go so that's where my knowledge ends.

Also there is a spring loaded cover over a void in the butt of the stock. Is that for putting a cleaning brush in or something?

This is my first SKS, so I am clueless...thanks for any help

Push down on the mag follower with your left thumb and gently release the bolt with your right hand, or unlatch the mag and ease the bolt forward.

The butt-trap is for the cleaning/tool kit.
