If you think Les is a bucket of laughs here, you should see him take the piss out of his fellow yanks on 24hourcampfire.
Just a wee bit more irreverent, a tiny little more profane and just a smidgen more sarcasm and we in Australia will adopt him !

Thanks, I'm try. Momma introduces me to friends as here resident Canadian, as I am A Canadians fan for Hockey, and I want to get back up north outta this hell hole. Yep, pretty sure the gentleman's Name was Ole Hermann Johannes Krag, oh man whatta name. :D Plus you guys have more hunting opportunities up there. Les

Les, these Canadians are just like Kiwi's, in that they are living in Gods country.
It makes me sick...with green, venomous jealousy.

This could be Gods country, if it weren't for all these idiotic rules we have here. Crap, we have our Elk season split up into 4 seasons, and each is only about a week long. :( Les

When I saw four seasons I thought...good, summer, Autumn, winter, spring, then you spoilt it with the bureaucratic reality.

the 30-40 is the 303 british redone. just as the 30-06 is derived from the 7x57. why come up with anything new when you can piggyback on the ideas of others.

i'd sure like a krag though, either a US carbine or an unmolested norwegian.

the 303 in some version of the lee enfield is surely the most common cartridge in canada.

Looks like MIG25 and I are in a race for a carbine.....

I will one day have both as my Grampa had a 1917 stamped No1 MKIII. There were also 30USG cases I found in the field last summer. Seeing as my Family has Norwegian decent it is only natural I get a Krag so chambered.
I do have one lined up but it's been D&T'd, otherwise a very nice little Carbine.

I'd say the Krag has the edge for bullet selection but the Brit is easily available as mentioned. Good luck finding Krag brass up here.

The Brit has an edge on the Krag only if you use it in a P14 where you can load it to potential. If it works as planned Les, I hope to get my next bull Elk with the Krag Carbine.

The other case is from the Savage 40 Super Sporter which is still eluding me....

No, it wasn't factory stamped, the barrel was originally a 22 H.P., they did a good job at trying to hide it, but Rick whipped out a Magnifying glass and showed me. It was an 1899 H, never did feed right, so it moved on out. Les

Nice, I only have one piece of brass that says 250 H.P. on it. Think I'm gonna have to find me an old Krag Carbine for the safe. Les

If you find two you know who might want the other if the price and condition ratio are within reason.;)

They sure seem to command alot of money tho. One sold here yesterday in a couple hours for a pretty heathy toll.

Any Winnie 1895 fans have an idea how many were chambered to .303 British vs .30 US Army? I know the Krag was very, very popular, but there are sure a whackadoo of .303Br '95 Winchesters north of the border.

Kilo, an Vet from the RAF got one as soon as he was discharged, in 303 Brit.
It was his only rifle he used for everything from guiding moose to sheep hunting in Alberta. He loves that gun and would never part with it.

As for hard numbers I cannot offer any, just thought by your avatar you might appreciate the yarn.

i load shoot and love them both equally! although as pointed out there is a better selection of .30 cal bullets for reloading. BUT, lots of Krags are long throated for the 220 RN, and might not shoot them lighter ones that great....

I have the best of both worlds. A #4 Lee Enfield (stronger than a Krag) in 30/40 Krag. I also have a Ruger 77 in 30/40 Krag, and a P14 in 30/40 Krag. I also have the obligatory lee Enfields in 303 British as well as my P14 "F" class rifle in 303. Oh, I also have a very nice Krag carbine in 30/40.
The 30/40 does have the advantage of a greater selection of bullets. All that's needed though is one bullet type which works and the rest are superfluous.
I have shot quite a few animals with both cartridges and the 303 has always seemed to kill better. I can't imagine why.
Favourite loads? The 165 Sierra HP gameking is a super deer bullet in the 30/40. I can drive it at about 2650 from the Lee Enfield. 2800 from the P14.
For elk, I like the 220 Hornadys at 2300 fps.
In the 303, the 150 Speer is great for whitetails. The 180 for elk. The 215 KKSP at 2300fps is also a good performer.
In a strong action, like the P14, both cartridges will outperform the 308. Regards, Bill
