X-ray before MRI

Was scheduled for an MRI today (getting old sucks) so when I booked the appointment I mentioned I'm a big hunter and use a shotgun for much of my game. Fortunately, they scheduled me for X-rays of my digestive system before the MRI.

Well, I'm glad they did because there is one piece of shot somewhere in my digestive tract. They didn't know if it was lead or steel, but suffice to say no MRI for me today. I assume they'll either wait for it to "flush out" or my doctor will recommend some other way to get it out (the MRI tech mentioned that if it was stuck in my appendix I may never get an MRI.)

Thought I'd share to potentially save someone the joys of having a steel BB ripped out from the inside.

You uhh, on the receiving end of a lot of shot? I feel like that's not really an issue for the overwhelming majority of hunters.

Thanks for sharing. This is not something I’ve come across, but after reading this I thought “why didn’t I think of that?”.

I’m familiar with the MRI questionnaire and have been asked about metal fragments in body, shrapnel, implanted devices, etc., but never considered consumed shot from hunted animals.

I imagine there are others who have been through an MRI with consumed shot, but I haven’t heard of any personally. Better safe than sorry. Good thing you brought up your dietary habits and good on the MRI tech for their follow through.

I would have thought that the overwhelming majority of hunters use a shotgun with shot for small game & bird hunting.

I use a shotgun for (i) rabbits, (ii) squirrels, (iii) grouse, (iv) pheasant, (v) ducks, (vi) geese, (vii) wild turkey, (viii) dove, and (ix) pigeon hunting. I guess I could use a 22 for rabbits, squirrels, and grouse but I prefer shotgun. To the best of my knowledge I am not legally allowed to hunt ducks, geese, and wild turkey with a single projectile in Ontario (unless it is archery).

I'm guessing it is lead 6 from a pheasant hunt, or 7.5 lead from rabbit hunting. I usually use steel BB for geese and steel 2 or 3 for ducks.

Derp, I assumed it got lodged somewhere at high velocity. Why I didn't assume it got there because you ate it... Who knows. Wasn't even early in the morning. f:P:2:

Good catch and warning for others.

They usually are concerned about people who do metal fabrication or machining due to the risk of a unknown fragment being under the skin
 
If you are interested in expediting the "flush out" try drinking the gallon of polyethylene glycol they make you drink before a colonoscopy

'Flush out' is calling it lightly lol

Two courses of Pico-Salax shoots everything out of you with a very special rapidity. Best to stay within 10 feet of the toilet Laugh2

a few years back a bunch of us were sitting around waiting to get a camera shoved up our butt. no one was saying much and i opened up with what a tough crowd we were after drinking that god awful stuff. that got people talking and helped to lower our anxiety.
 
There is a doctor that actually put steel shot in an MRI machine to test this, the shot did not move.

They talked about this on The Meateater podcast.

There may be a problem so they check, but everyone should be checked as you never know when you get a metal sliver and not notice if it came out fully or not.
