just a quick poll. buddy of mine is interested in these two.

i know the poll will no doubt be swayed a bit by the whole Remington vs Savage thing, but any comments form people who have owned either/both of these as to which is the better gun?

i should have mentioned that if you vote 'they both suck hind tit' you are obligated to nominate a better heavy varmint rig in the $1100 price range. I know that the T3 is the greatest single hunting implement ever devised by man.

Remingtons seem to always shoot awesome, especially the higher end ones with good stocks. My buddy has the VSSF II in 223 and it will shoot Winchester white box 45 gr JHP into half inch 5 shot groups at 100 meters, consistently. I wouldnt want to be a golf ball at 300! Easy to tune the triggers to a great crisp weight, and they have good resale value and are in high demand. That being said, the Savage is probably just as accurate

love mine. shoots .5 all day long, and often better.... that's a .39" 3 rounder.

They are both good guns for the money. If your not a die hard Remmy guy or Savage guy, its a tough choice. Maybe the answer lies with the twist rate??

What do you want to shoot and how far away?

not me - im done with heavyweight varmint rigs for walkaround varminting in Ontario. my buddy has yet to learn his lesson :)

groundhogs, coyotes, etc. he'll probably go for the .22-250, i only listed the larger cal Senderos in the poll because for all intents and purposes its the same gun as the VSSF - so if someone owns one id like to hear their thoughts.

Rem. VSSF: .22-250 = 1:14", .223, .204 = 1:12"
Sav. LRPV: .22-250, .204 = 1:12", .223 = 1:9"

inside 200-300 yards, velocity is king, and will drift and drop less. Past that, high BC rules the roost.

However, fast-twist barrels will stabilize lightweight bullets well enough to offer gopher accuracy at 200 and 300 yards. Maybe not the bughole groups that a well tuned twist-optimized rifle can manage - but a hit is still a hit, right?

for my money, it's a 223 Savage 10 or 12FVLP, a 223 Tikka, or a fast-twist 223 700 (I think the 700P is available in this configuration)

I also think a fast twist 22-250 which can stabilize the 75 grain AMAX is about the most awesome varmint gun you could possibly get. Speed, BC, terminal effectiveness, low recoil and powder consumption. It's *very* nearly as good as a 243 in terms of ballistics, for less recoil and powder consumption, giving you a better chance of witnessing the impact through your scope.

As far as I know, such a config is a purely custom option (though I hear rumours of a factory fast-twist 22-250 fomr Savage)
