A hammer and letter stamps would work, you could get it engraved as well which may look nicer.
What and how do you guys use to stamp caliber on a new barrel ? I bought a new Shilen blank and had it turned, profiled and fitted to an action so wondering what you all do to stamp the barrel for what caliber it is ?
Thanks !
I use a hammer and stamps, as I have been doing for 45 years.
"Freehand" usually just looks wonky.
Laser or Machine engraving is nice but stamping works fine how ever I would suggest practicing as it is not as easy as it appears to get nice results as shown in Guntechs picture. Stamping many components and plates in my line of work a nice trick to help keep a straight line is to use a piece of sticky emery paper to butt the stamps against. Then you only need to worry about the spacing.
I kept damaged steel tape measures just for hand stamping... tape it to the barrel and use the edge to place the stamp against... being right eyed I stamped backwards... right to left and sighted down the edge of the stamp for spacing. It worked well for many years until my eyes got a bit wonky and straight lines ceased to exist for me.
What's a Laserpecker? Looks good.
Lol laser engraving machine. They're pretty slick, we got one recently at the shop.
Most of us did it that way...

My quality hand stamps were less than $100.
What did your machine cost? Less than $3000?
Depending on where a fella is, it might not be a bad idea to see if there is an 'old-school' trophy and gift type shop around that has a Pantograph Engraver.
