here i go again! I have been thinking of have a rifle re chambered to a .338-06, would a swedish mauser M96 work? i see lots of them for sale on tradeexcanada chambered in 30-06

Dont think...do it. I have a Win M70 action chambered in 338-06. I love it, and it will handle anything on this continent.
The action you mentioned should handle it.

If you need a gunsmith that is very reputable and cuts a nice chamber, pm me.

I looked around for one last summer, then thought of building one, but I went with the .338WM instead. Lots of them around and you can load it down if recoil is a concern. I really don't know why more manufactures don't chamber for the .338-06, I think its a great loading for all around hunting.

FWIW for the $$ it would cost to build one on a M96, you could buy a stainless .338WM Savage, Ruger, Tikka, Browning or Rem XCR for less. I'm not saying the magnum is a better cartridge, just a lot cheaper.
