I was at the local gun shop today, and I sae a few rifles stamped Baikal on the bottom, and Remington on the side, and into the barrel was USSR. and typical with my local dealer, ver expensive. Anyone know what the deal is with Bikal and remington and Russia?
thanks

Remington is buying Baikal shotguns and having them labelled Remington. Other companies like Winchester, Browning and Weatherby had guns of their design made in Japan but this is different these guns are not Remingtons , they are Baikals, with a decal.

So do you think it would be a wise purchase or should I look at a Baikal?
the one specific I was ooogling was a .22 over .410
thanks

I have a Baikal single shot .410 and I haven't had any problems with it. I mean, it's not a top of the line shotgun...but it knocks down the partridges just fine! :D

Baikals are built tough. They are heavy, last forever, not so pretty, but get the job done.

I have a Baikal side by side 12 guage handed down to me from my grandfather that he bought in 1967, this shotgun never needed to change any part and still works great, I still use it for small game when I go out.
No bells and whistles on it but reliable.

Tough guns, not safe queens though. The .22/410 should go for $399 new.

BTW the barrel must be old stock, to be stamped USSR. I have a 20g single I bought around 1989 or so that is stamped USSR on the receiver, but my newer 20g O/U is stamped Russia.

If I'm not mistaken they are also making the 799 Riffles. I was looking at this one the other week in a 22 hornet and it had the same markings.

Felt like a great little riffle...not the best looking but my dealer also said that they are built to take a beating and not look pretty!!!

actually, just doing a little research...I might be wrong. From what I can find is that the 799 is made by Spartan Gun works out of what I can find...possibly Serbia (there is a note on remingtons site of the designer of the 798's and 799's being from there but I can't find any other info)

Made in the Zastava Gun works, Serbia, formerly Yugoslavia. They are the same action that used to be sold as the Interarms Mark X.

remingtons spartan line is made in serbia. Baikal is actually a town or city in russia and has manufactured guns for quite a long time, under the name baikal. remingtons spartan line is really not all that bad.

I have a 410/22 combo. I like it, multi chokes are a plus. Its a bit weird to select the next barrel to fire you almost need to brake the action open. Talking to a london gun store the sent some of the baikal 410/22 back, second barrel would not fire after one has been fired. Mine is ok. A 22 mag would be a bonus. Regards age

Baikal

I've had 2 Baikal branded shotguns, both were strong like bull, pulled plow, bore many sons. Sold first one and regretted it. Will never sell this one. First was a 20-bore with true external hammers and English stock, dating to 1965. Current is a 16-bore presentation boxlock from 1967. Both superb shooters.
