Why not ask him?
Forsure, he likes pretty much everything that I have in my collection and would be happy with anything he gets. Just a fun topic to discuss with everyone here.
Why not ask him?
Uhmmm.........ya dun furrrgit the 35rem.......................
Get him into a Ruger in 308win.
The BLR has crossed my mind a few times. Light, relatively compact and a bit better range than the 30-30.
Is a lever not a harder gun for a beginner to master than a bolt gun ?
Specifically follow up shots on game.
Remington Model 7 in 308 or a Ruger M77 MKII compact also in 308.
Short, lightweight, easy to resell if you don't like them, both run around a $1000 for stainless, laminate versions.
Your location is listed as brant County is that not still a shotgun only zone ?
I hunted off #6 concession near old 97 rd years ago for turkey./rabbit/deer.. could hear the lions and elephants from the safari...

Would a Ruger #1 or winny/browning 1885 be an option. 1885 low wall can be found in 6.5x55
A No 1 would make a fantastic rifle for a lifetime of hunting.

Teach him to pull the hammer back on the lever before working it.
Eases the throw weight of the lever and, well, it's just way easier.
Model 7 in 308win will be on my table in April iff'in you manage to head to Loopyland and attend
this great show.
