$1500 USD MSRP Setup - ORPS

Yes, I don’t see the benefit myself once a guy is chasing the podium. If matches were an hour drive away maybe.
I suspect some that are close to hardware in open will switch. The need for glory is strong in some. Equipment will only get you so far. The rest is talent of the craft that comes with practice and experience. I’m personally happy to see the change that will allow much better flexibility. The most important thing is to have fun.

Yeah, there are always a few who care about hardware…

But once you invest in an open rig, dropping back to a basic setup is much less appealing. You want to shoot what you want to shoot. That’s said, for those without open rigs and thousands invested, the rifle/scope pool just got bigger and that’s good for everyone.

In all honesty I enjoy shooting more basic gear. And am not as big a fan of the change.

My Savage B22 is setup for the old production class rules. And it was not my limiting factor in scoring ever last year. I can off the bench consistently hold 5 shot groups in around an inch .8-1.5 averages at 100 yards. Now throw in the time limit the awkward barricades and positional shooting and that’s when I struggle. So clearly the rifles not my limiting factor and I’d gain little by spending more. I can improve far more spending the extra on more ammo to practice. But to the uninitiated and new comers seeing the $1600 rifles may be discouraging to those who just want to give this a try witb what they got. Sure it should be all about the fun but no one wants to go in thinking they have zero chance of even competing.

But that all being said I still prefer shooting my CZ457 Canadian with its basic 2-7x32 vortex crossfire 2. Even at 100 yards. Yeah I shoot better with the savage but the CZ is just fun and hard to shoot tight groups. There is a thought I had tk pickup a synthetic CZ457 mount on a leupold rimfire 2-7x33 with its BDC reticle and try running that a few matches just for laughs and a different challenge (bet I’d do better with something like that for the unsupported. So despite rule change I May go even more basic at some point this year or next (this way I can make even more excuses for my lousy shooting lol).

Other changes to the equipment allowed will also bring the two divisions closer
Bag restrictions added a challenge to Production, if and when the rules were enforced
Now about the only diff is the use of tripods for rear support
I can see some OPEN shooters changing to the new PROduction ;)

I would suggest you consider the Helos BTR Gen2 6-24X56 Mil... even less money and better glass. This is the scope that will be on my rifles
FYI, the midas Tac Gen2 has the newer glass like the helos g2. The reg tac has the last gen lenses.... great scope but Athlon keeps improving stuff.

saying the main difference is the tube dia now?

You would be amazed how much a balanced rifle can improve your shooting from the awkward barricades so yeah I'd say the rifle can be a limiting factor. Are you going to shoot to the rifles true potential by having balanced rifle, probabaly not, but its better than a rear heavy rifle off a tank trap tip.

no... the Helos and Midas Tac g2 share similar/better glass. Gen 1 midas tac use the original spec glass... still very good and was best in breed when it first came out. I feel the G2 stuff is better.

There are 30mm tubes Helos G2s if that is what you want to use.... I much prefer the 34mm tube

It seems, Athlon continues to improve each new product line... and don't seem to upgrade historical scopes with the latest stuff.

Stock CZ 457 Pro Varmint (comes with Match Chambered barrel) with an Arken EP-5 (5-25 x 56).

I never really thought of it, but add-on the Optic [34 mm tube with the big glass on the end], plus the Area 419 Arca Rail and she’s pretty weighty. The MDT Grnd-pod is really light, though .

I can respect this. And you’re right, basic stuff can be tons of fun. But for gear nerds like many of us, the change opens up more things and more things to tinker with, which is always fun to see different things, and kind of was the whole purpose of this thread. Just to shoot the #### related to gear.

But the thing is for the gear nerds there was all ready open class so this seems kinda redundant to me. If you had wanted to shoot fancy shoot open. If you wanted the basics and entry level shoot production. But alas the change is not really going to affect me.

Yeah, there is still a significant gap in a proper open setup vs maybe an extra $300 by way of new rules.

Like you said, it will be just fine with your 457, and if you wanted to upgrade the glass you always could. Both pre and post new rules, so that’s up to you.

And we all know, whether you spend the full $1600 or $1200, the gear will not be the limiting factor to do well.

I'll still be shooting my $250 rifle in open, because it has a custom stock and I did a trigger job. It's not like I'm going to be top-flight competitive in either class, but it lets me do whatever I want and I can have fun shooting with like minded people and improve my skills at the same time. Sometimes I shoot better than others on a stage, other times I bomb it, but those are not because of my cheap rifle. I suppose I could maybe use my 10/22 target model and try production, but I've probably done enough work to it to not qualify too. Silly me for shortening the original 20" barrel to 18.25", I should have just recut the crown and left the length.

I definitely don't regret buying my Helps, it's a great scope.
