Hi guys
What is the typical value of a ported Marlin guide gun in 45-70?
Has the wild west lever tune kit installed(trigger, follower, bear proof extractor)
XS sites, and a nice leather carriage holder.
Bluing is 95% or better
Wood is 90%+ it has a few marks, nothing terrible but it has been carried.
I just never see any of these original ported guide guns for sale, and have no clue how to put a value on it.

Thoughts?

At the end of the day, regardless of its other options, it is a ported rifle. Do you want to hunt with a ported rifle? Some would, many would not. Unless it was significantly lower in price than an equivalent non-ported rifle, I personally would pass. Even then, at risk of repeating myself, do you want to hunt with a ported rifle?

That was 0% helpful or related to the OPs question. Well done, very good CGNing.

People seem to be asking anywhere from 1500 - 2400 bucks for JM marked 1895s. I have not checked what the Ruger made version is selling for, that would useful info. I owned the 444 version (Outfitter with porting, and loved it. Put on a IER scout scope and it was perfect for Northern Ont woods. The porting makes it loud but I never noticed it when firing factory or my 270 gr handloads - EXCEPT at the range. I would not fire the rifle with anyone beside me. In the field I had no problems. I don't think all the extra bits add value. I would see the original parts were available.

Well and the reason I am asking, is the what seams to be crazy to me pricing currently. 2000-3000 asking for JM guns.
Everyone I know with a marlin, added or eventually added the wildwest stuff, because the factory trigger was floppy and garbage, the follower was plastic and fell apart, and the extractor was known to fail, so thus is why they have sold so many of these kits.
I hate seeing guns ridiculously priced and then bumped for weeks and weeks on end.
I am pondering the idea of getting a Bighorn Armory in 500 s&w I know that the 500 and the 45-70 are close to each other ballisticly, but the 500 is much more interesting.
So since this one has been in my gun room for years, and I have yet to see any comparables, is the reason for my question.
And USA pricing on most things is useless, as we are in Canada and looking on US auction sites, does not give you a number to go by.

I have exactly this gun. It needed a new loading gate spring, trigger work, and tuning. Work done by Rusty Woods in the hills above Mission BC. Damn thing kicks and is loud, not sure how that varies from a regular 1895g. It's after all a decent capacity of powder, short barrel, and pushes bullets in the 300-500 gr range. Mine hates feeding the pointed Hornady ftx ammo. It is what it is, loud and kicking; but also short/portable and lethal. Just a FYI, these were manufactured from about 1998-2004, so before JM quality took a downturn.

Prices for JM 1895g are ridiculous, if your downgrading price because of porting, OK. It's still ridiculous but a few hundred less. I would give them a current market value of about $2000 in excellent condition. I'm not into mine for that, nor would I pay that. But I have a few other choices.

On ####### theres a couple JM stamped 1895's in 45-70 for $1500-$2000. These are just regular 1895's, blued with wood stock. Hopefully that gives you an idea. Some guys might pay more for a ported one so they dont have to do it themselves but 9/10 it decreases value.

I do know the SBL's and Trappers bring top dollar right now. I sold both of mine for $2500 and $2300. And only cause I had guys offer me that for them. I was wanting to trade more than anything, but when I was offered that, I couldn't say no. They were safe queens I really didn't need, I never shot them enough to warrant them taking up space. They were plinking guns that cost an arm and a leg to shoot. Not to mention with the cost of living climbing, sometimes that spare coin is nice to have in the bank. And as always, what goes up, must come down. Once you start to see them at dealers for $1900 again for a brand new one, used ones will come back to reality. Unless it has sentimental value, you can always buy another one ;)

I did with my 1895G 45-70 and never noticed the noise at all ! People to the side did notice the extra Noise as they do with Braked rifles . RJ

I got rid of my ported model approx 10 yrs ago for around $700.
Replaced it with a non ported version for around the same price

I used to translate US auction prices to Canadian $. So a $1000USD used gun would sell for approx $1000 cdn. But gun availability and pricing has gone a bit crazy and this formula is perhaps obsolete. The other factor is the "JM marked" cachet. So the right guy will pay alot for the rifle, and the added bits will attract that guy. There is no such thing as "overpriced" for that rifle in this period of time. Love the rifle, good luck with the sale/purchase.

I bought mine thinking of the BC coastal jungle. Tiny deer, large and numerous Black Bear. It's really a niche gun, load it down to basically a gallery gun or load stomper loads to the bottom of 458wm. I just don't see it as a "stopper" gun unless your loading it to a level where it wounds on one end and kills on the other. The turn of the 20th century philosophy of a large frontal size at moderate speed. Would I buy one for $2000+, no. Would I sell mine, also no. A trade to a Bighorn armory 460 or 500sw, absolutely.

Ahhh, too subtle for you then. :)

Uhh not so much, you weren't real subtle. The fact that you think that you preference for a non-ported rifle for hunting has a significant impact on this rifle's value is pretty funny though.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it doesn't; your preferences aren't everyone's preferences. This gun is worth what it's worth despite you not wanting it, lol.

Well this was my thought, I have wanted a Bighorn for a long time, and with PR bringing them in again, I thought to myself, well I don't need the 45-70 and a 500S&W so maybe its time to let the Marlin go, and grab a Bighorn Spike Driver. But with the current market, I had no clue what even to value the Ported guide gun at? As I have not seen one for sale in so long, that coming up with a value seamed like there was a huge margin for error, and didn't want to under price it by alot, nor did I want to be the guy, everyone looks at the add, and goes "that is crazy price, and he will never get it"

Sold my last guide gun years ago for under $1000. Shoot ‘86s now but had a few marlins. Super accurate and functional guns, fired my ported one once without hearing protection, sold it.

Scotty,

Sorry that you took exception to my post. Where do I start to repair our friendship? Sit beside a guy shooting a ported rifle at the range and you shall be enlightened. As for the noise, I do have 3 ported rifles, so I feel I am qualified to share my comments here on CGN. Double hearing protection is recommended. Ah well, have a nice day my friend. :)

2000 era JM 1895GS 45-70. Tricked out with the usual WW stuff plus ghost ring and Firesite and their light mount. 2.5x Leupold IER in low QD rings on a scout base.

Mine started out as a work carbine. Take the scope off for traversing.

But now I find it's a good BC truck rifle. Cable locked, in a short case with 9 rounds of 400gr Buffalo Bore hardcast in the stock shell holder, throw it behind the seat of my truck and cover it with a blanket.

Covers all of my bases plus with a few 2.5" .410 birdshot can do chickens at close range.

I wouldn't worry about a ported 1895. Mine isn't but I keep a pair of Peltor sound blocking hearing muffs in my truck for shooting.
