AK mag to type 81 use

Would have been nice if they just made the t81 to use AK mags... I have a factory drum mag with no mods that works interchangeably in an m10x and t81
Why not just make mags the same.

Maybe it has something to do with the lack of a bolt hold open on empty of the AK be the Type 81? That’s all I can think of?? I know the drums don’t hold open on empty.

yup, the T81 is a better AK so it was designed to have BHO but also they didnt want their enemy to use any of their mags and parts so nothing are interchangeable.
 
Here is a modified & original mag side by side to see what needs to be removed. I modified several years ago before TI offered factory 5/5 mags.
Need a slot in the back to clear the BHO and a bit off the front to clear the type 81 trunnion. A mill works best, but you could likely get the same results with a file &/or dremel & steady hands.

The front usually only needs modding to clear 2 internal rivet heads. And the back to accommodate the BHO Tab like pictured. One in theory could remove the BHO Tab from their Type 81 and need to do zero modification to the back of an AK mag..... losing the last round BHO is a major down grade IMO.
 
Is there any advantage to AK mags?

I understand some might already have AK mags for other guns, but if you don't is there any reason to get AK mags rather than just getting t81 mags? Is it a cost thing? A "just because" thing?
 
IF you are look for 30 rds then stick to T81 but if you want 20rds or 40rds then go with ak bcos T81 dont come in those sizes. best place to get them is from marstar. KCI cost a bit more.

two years ago marstar would mod the AK mags to fit T81 for only $10. i dont know if they still do it.

I got some PMags that Hical used to modify for a fee. Having polymer mags but no bolt hold open - six of one, half dozen of the other.... I prefer the OEM with bolt hold open
