Hi all,

So I just bought a 590 shockwave with 14” heavy barrel for the purpose of building a sbs.
We in Canada are surprisingly lucky to have decent laws regarding this.

Anyways My thoughts where to start with a magpul stock and forend (with modification to fit)
But still on the fence about it.
I love the look of magpul but still open to ideas.

Would love to see some builds for inspiration and hear some thoughts on what I should
do with it!

I just bought one as well(wish Cabelas would get around to shipping the damned thing as we are now nearly 1 week past the order date but I digress) with the same intent. I found a Hogue 12" L.O.P. stock for mine here on the E.E., I am about go pick it up from the post office. No plans to do anything else to it aside from perhaps adding a sling, and if it shoots low like many reviews claim it does then I'll probably drop an XS Big Dot sight on it. Perhaps a velcro on shotshell card if I'm feeling really crazy.

Most definitely go with the Magpul SGA stock ,it's the most versatile one out there and you might want to skip the magpul forend and go right to a light, Surefire if you can afford it , Streamlite is also good and its cheaper and the light is brighter.
And get a GG&G sling plate for under the mag cap, it also keeps the sling out of the way of the light , the Magpul para clip fits the flat one with a loop and GG&G also make one for a push button QD.
Here's the evolution of mine ,far right , what I started with , on the left , what I have now.

i put a sling on mine and also wrapped the grip with rubber bike tube. the rubber on the grip makes a world of difference. its a lot of fun and practical for some hunting applications as brobee 223 , a member on here has demonstrated. give it an honest try and i do not mean a half dozen rounds. it is short, slim, easy to carry and useful firearm . good luck whatever you decide .

Short barrels tend to shoot high, a taller front sight will bring the poi down lower.

OP, +1 on giving the birds head grip a real try. Once you get the push/pull technique down it works real well, worth trying out imho regardless of if you put a full length stock on it.

Congrats OP on your new 590. I just got a Retro with the 18.5” barrel. The pic below shows a 12” Akkar Churchill with the new 590. Both have their own purpose, which I won’t discuss on a public forum.

I have the Remington tac 14 which is different in its own respect but the same concept so I’ll share what I have learned regarding the magpul forend: it seems to ride forward enough that it will interfere with the front sling plate/sling so I’m going to have to move both sling points to the left side of the gun (not a huge deal but I was hoping to use the sling as sort of a hand stop as the tac 14 didn’t come with the hand strap that the Mossberg has.

Yes, this is exactly why I had the XS Big Dot earmarked as a replacement if I find it shooting high, the sight is considerably taller than the the stock brass bead.

That Streamlight fore end is badass!! May have to pick one of those up!

Thanks everyone for the input.
I think I'm going to go with the magpul stock and keep the stock forend for now.
In the future I think the magpul with some sort of light mount that utilizes a detachable light.

What mount and light is that on the magpul forend?! That one is wicked

It's a ancient Surefire G2 incandescent light with a Surefire shock isolated bezel mounted with a VLTOR scout mount , it throws slightly more light then a Zippo lighter.

If I were still running a magpul forend , I think I would try a Olight Sigurd Angled Grip Light , that looks like it'd be cool.

Just took it out to the range yesterday and it shot almost a foot high at 10m..
Just ordered the defender tactical highball front bead and the rear safety sight to try out.
Hoping for the best but that shot wayyy higher than expected.

For reference on a 12.5” length barrel that had a really tall front sight post that paired with a ghost ring rear sight, I removed the rear sight completely and took a long metal yard stick/straight edge and layed it on the top of the receiver.

This was where I cut my front sight down to, then I tapped a new brass bead for the cut down front ramp/pedestal that was level with the receiver. When I line up my front sight the ramp disappears visually and the bead is 80-100% visible when shooting slugs and buckshot, if shooting grouse up close (15-25m) I burry the front sight below the top line of the receiver till only the top 25% of the bead is in my sight picture. Aiming like this results in a head shot on grouse on the road.

You’ll likely be bang on like this with a 14” barrel, the extra length will help.

I will have to see where the bead I ordered ends up with the receiver when it arrives.
The stock bead oddly enough is almost a 1/4” lower than the receiver which is why it shoots so high.
The shockwave doesn’t have a pedestal as it is threaded directly into the barrel so maybe I will have to make some modifications
If im not satisfied with the highball.

This is from a different thread but it looks like Mossberg defenders have a taller bead so you might be able to correct it with the taller bead.

This is what I got for my retro 590. Mine has the ridiculously low front bead. Defender Tactical has a taller front sight that solves this issue.
