These are two pistols I'm looking at. I've narrowed it down to these two.
They both fit my budget (wifes budget ) which is the $400 dollar mark. I've read good remarks on both...what will tax return season present me with? What are your thoughts or opinions?

The Ruger feels like crap but the NZ is ergonomic. Women will find the shape and size of the NZ grip way better if you are thinking of getting her into shooting.

Correction, Ruger with stock grips feels like crap.

You slap the Hogue's on there and it's a whole different ball game.

I just got my 89 an bringing it to the ready, the sights are almost perfectly alligned, an I haven't been practising or anything.

My vote goes to the Ruger P89.
I have the KP89DC, the stainless one with a decocking lever.

+1 for the houge grips, either replacing the whole grip or just a slip on one will make a huge differance.
So far I've got about a 1000 rounds through'er and had only one round get all funny on me, it was one of my first 9mm reloads, but other than that it has run perfect with factory ammo.

I'd get the NZ85 over the Ruger or the NZ75. It may be a Nork, but it's all forged and milled steel. Ruger is gross looking and has a cast alloy frame :)

Ruger. I've got a P85, very similar to the 89. +2 on the grips- the stock grips are too thick for my hands. I tried the Pachmayr Signature grips and found them to be even worse. Looking for some Hogues now. Good basic 9mm, not the most accurate and the trigger needs work, but will fire all day long, eats anything you feed it, and your grandkids will be able to use it long after you're gone. Not sure a Norc will last that long...

I loved my NZ-85...not sure why I traded it to Gunnar...I guess the urge for something new. It's a really solid handgun and when equipped with CZ-style Hogue grips is very comfortable. Even the trigger was good out of the box. Those Rugers are butt-ugly and I haven't cared for the 9mm's I've tried (tho I own a 22/45, Redhawk .44Mag and 10/22).

I vote that you add to your wife budget and buy a used CZ75

Look for a decent used gun or save a little more money and get a glock, CZ-75,etc, I think both of your choices leave a little to be desired.

I'd get the Norc over the P89. I like Ruger and all.....but the 89 makes me want to vomit when I look at it. If you don't care about looks though the Ruger is fine.

If your around the $400 mark and have the patience to save another $100 there are some good used pistols you can get for the price on the EE if you look.

Basically I'm looking for a 9mm pistol to keep me in the Restricted class.
My original budget was $300. I won't be putting umpting thousand rounds out the barrel, it'll be a very casual shoot...a just to have pistol. I chose 9mm because it's bigger than a .22 and smaller than a .45. Shooting costs won't be huge. Your responses BTW are greatly appreciated :D

Its not thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ugly. ;):D

I've got an NZ 75 and am very happy with it. Very accurate, fits the hand easily. I don't see much point in getting the 85 unless you are left-handed (it's the same except for controls on both sides.)

Different hammer, different sights, different dust cover, rib on slide of 85, ambi safety on 85.....the 85 just looks more refined then the 75. For the exact same price the 85 is the better buy. Now, the NP40 goes one step further with full rail on the slide, and if you don't mind .40S&W would be better buy still.

I would go for what fits your hand best. In either case it's not a lot of money. Have you considered what it will cost for a gun club membership?

It looks like you can paint the Ruger black and hide how ugly it is. :)
