Henry 17HMR

Pictured is a brass with the rim blown off.
From a Henry lever action rifle in 17 HMR.
I don't know much about Henry rifles. I haven't torn it apart
yet, appears to lock up OK.
Anybody experience a problem with these, or hear of any?

SH!T happens sometimes.

That is most likely an ammo problem, unless it has happened a bunch of times. I wouldn't worry about a one time event.

Unsure of ammo brand.
A fellow I don't know owned the gun. When the incident happened he became alarmed and discarded the rifle. An acquaintance rescued the rifle and brought it over.
I checked it over and have fired some Hornady ammo. No separations, but the heads bulge as shown. Thinking maybe a headspace issue, the head blowing back a little before being flattened against the bolt face.....?

Headspace is controlled by the rim. IF a rimfire had excess headspace, it would likely not even ignite the primer as the rim wouldn't get crushed by the firing pin.

I'm thinking that would depend on the firing pin protrusion. If it comes out far enough, could ignite, then the head bulges back from pressure. I think that might explain my bulged cases and perhaps the end coming right off a different brand of brass.
Not saying you're wrong, just thinking out loud. Soon as I get time I'll tear it down again and maybe take some measurements.

The bolt face may be properly cut for the rim, but lockup occurs farther back. The hammer will drive the bolt forward and let the firing pin ignite the priming mixture, once pressure builds the bolt is pushed rearward exposing any excessive headspace.

The bulged heads look like excessive headspace. Contact your gunsmith or Henry, an oversize Lock Bar or other parts may be available.
