Your last rifle

I have so many 30-06 brass that a 8mm-06 would be cool! Hmmm 2 8x57, one could become a 8mm-06 maybe! Gunsmith with the right reamer, any suggestions?

We have the same problem……and it’s been a recurring thought. Would it necessarily have any noticeable difference than the x57, I don’t know. But would be fun to have.

If you're wanting bigger that 30, you don't gain anything by going to 8mm, and I have two "never sell" 8x57 (rimmed and normal)

I say go to 8.5 mm or 9.3

Why bother with 8/06 dgy? Make your 30-06 brass into 8x57 and keep the guns intact

As much as I hate to admit it as a 338 wm fan, the 338-06 is pretty close to perfect on several metrics

Yeah I guess so…

I think it is great that there are so many 9.3 x 62 fans. While I am past hunting with mine, there are lots of reasons to use it.

Certainly, with heavy bullets and heavy loads recoil is substantial, but not excessive; a good limbsaver pad made quit a difference on mine, but being a slip-on, I still shoot sometimes without it.

Lighter bullets are available which are well suited to deer size game, although the big 280+ gr bullets go through a deer without fully expanding and destroying meat.

Lots flat enough out to 300 yards. Sight in a 284 gr bullet 4" high at 100, point of impact will be about 4" low at 250; I think about 7" at 300. Still with over 2000 lb of energy at 300.

What's not to like. LOL.

8mm-06 can get 338-06 type of performance. 200 gr at about 2800 fps, 220gr Sierra Game king with a BC of .521 at 2700 fps. 250gr Woodleigh at 2550 fps

My 8x57's cant keep up with that. Average velocity out of the 8x57 with a 200gr is 2550-2600 fps. 220gr at 2450-2500 fps.

I'd go 35 whelan, or the 450 bushmaster.

The bushmaster has the advantage of small rifle primes, and they are plentiful. You should have no problem going out to 300m.

Make sure you have brass available before you decide what route you go, as that would be the hinderance on caliber.

The 400 legend and 450 bushmaster are no 300 yards moose cartridges imo!

As for 8mm-06 you get with 200 bullets what 30-06 gets with 180 or at least that’s what I’m reading!
My 8x57 gets 2650fps with 200gn accubonds, so 150fps more I guess!

DG have you shot anything with the game kings? I was interested in them for the 8x57 but the Sierra website says that "It will prove to be too “hard” at 8x57mm velocities, and is not recommend- ed for use in any cartridge producing less than magnum-level velocities". Any suggestions for similar spitzer 220s?

I'd still go for 338 on a "heavy" build, much better selection of 225- 250 grain bullets, many of which are "soft" cup and cores. As they say " in matters of taste there is no opinion"

That's what i read as well about the 220gr. A few years back i shot some in some wood and recovered the bullet. Not a scientific test by any means but gave me an idea what to expect. At 2450-2500 fps i wouldn't hesitate using it on big game like moose.

I have used an 8mm-06 for whitetail. Only ever used Sierra 150 gr, Game King I think they are. Had a “sporterized” 8x57 Czech 98 done years ago. Worked just fine. One just behind the front leg, done. No idea of the fps.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm pushing a 290 grain muzzle load tip Barnes copper) at 2300 ish fps, so will still have over 1100 joules of energy out at 300m. From what I gather that should still be plenty of oomph out there.

If you want to go nostalgic you could always go the .50 cal muzzle loader route with a 300 grain tip. Guys are now pushing the range of those smoke poles with the newer smokeless powder route to amazing distances, but you have to be okay with thinking outside the box.

Never used game king, only 200gn accubond and shot my moose with it last fall 100m pass through with broken ribs in and out !

Could be but I like over 1400foot pounds minimum on target, and I think that is what the full of tomb is for moose and elk! But I never shoot games past 200 anyway so it doesn’t matter to me hahaha

So I am at a point where my supplies should last me for the rest of my functional shooting life. I would like to pick up one more rifle for hunting purposes ( deer/moose). What I would like is a good bolt action chambered in something that fits the following:

1) Non magnum ( tired of looking for primers)
2) Reasonably tolerable recoil ( I am still pretty sturdy )
3) Relatively flat shooting out to 300 ish yards
4) No overbore cartridges
5) Larger than 30 cal

My current idea is looking at a 35 Whelen build but would like to hear some other suggestions and experiences.

For your criteria, I would look at the /06 case, and would avoid the 8mm and 9.3mm options. A .338/06 or Whelen are both good choices... lots of bullets available, good velocities to 300+ yards. Personally, I went in hard on the .35's, only because in my window of experience, I started racking up a plethora of positive experiences in the field. Having said that, I doubt with equal bullet weights you will see one iota of difference on game with any of the /06 case options from .30 cal through .375 cal... if all you want to shoot are 200 grain, you might aswell just do a .30/06, no point in reinventing the wheel.

Another vote for 8x57, a new to me one just walked in the door yesterday. A Danzig, bubba had a go at it but still usable to me.

I know this isn’t the answer you want, but go with the 30-06. The options are endless. Recoil can be minimized, versatility is extensive and if we think a 35 Whelen is going to kill markedly better we are up at night.

^^^Agree^^^ Most difficult to beat the 30-aught-6 for versatility. Currently I've been exercising handloads with 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. I'm quite impressed with velocities and accuracy to date. It would be most prudent for the OP to follow-through on such a great cartridge, however other cartridge mentioned are most sound.
