358 Winchester

Ive got 4 Winchester 88s in 358 and even went as far as having a Winchester Model 100 rebored to 358. Havent had to buy ammo for years as have enough so lucky that way. You wont regret it so go get it !
 
Looks like according to Hodgdon load data it pushes the Speers 220 about 150-250 fps faster than the 35 Remington depending on what powder youre using. I guess where it really shines is with the heavier bullets.

Oh, that 225gr with BL-C2 at 2430fps sounds deadly

It's a savage 99 lever rifle a family friend has owned since the 1950s. He's in his late 80 and his kids don't want it. I looked at it last week, it's in really nice condition, with a perfect bore.
 
Get it! You'll be glad you did! Great cartridge! Fun to hunt and shoot, and punches way above what paper ballistics may indicate.
Hard to find a 99 in 358 Win. (a favourite brush gun in Alaska!)

I have had a pre-81 BLR for over 20 years and have packed more than any other rifle, as it is my back up guiding and archery rifle, camp rifle and main saddle/atv gun. And I finally got my left handed bolt action rifle in 358!

Ammo may not always be easy to find, but is an easy cartridge to reload for. I have even found Winchester ammo in both 200 gr Power Point and SilverTips recently. Hornady makes the 200 gr Interlock and HSM makes the 225 gr SGK ammo. 200/220/225 gr bullets best for all around use on big game, and you won't feel undergunned should you run into a nasty ol' bear.

No idea if you need it or not But you absolutely want it so get it and have fun shooting and hunting with it . RJ

I've never owned a 99 and only handled a couple but they seem to have a cult following. Also jumped up a bunch in price the last few year, but than again so has everything else.
I didn't even know 99's came in 358, had to look it up. Seems like a great combo

A Savage 99 in .358 Win is pretty unique, that alone should sway you.
The cartridge is a true sleeper, I’ve got a pre 81 BLR in .358 Win, and love it. 200 grain SP’s are my everyday everywhere load and 225 grain Partitions if I’m in the, I feel I need more kinda mood.

The problem is i don't do anything half ways. I'll get this one, spend time loading, shooting, learning about it so that I'm grown fond of it and then I'll end up getting 4 more in different models and calibers so i can do the same with them. I know myself by now and it's inevitable, really. Not that I mind.

Get the rifle.
358 BLR stainless takedown is my go-to for pretty much everything from coastal blacktail to black bear to moose.
The savage might not like the hotter loads. My 99C in 308 gets sticky with doubletap 308 loads, and I suspect the same thing would happen with Buffalo bore style 358 loads In a 358.

I finally got my H Dumoulin to the gunsmith to get reamed so I can shoot 225gr tsx which doesn't feed well in the BLR.

My "hot load" days are done. In that same context I am still surprised when i l find myself driving the speed limit, and now seldom need to pass 15 cars to get somewhere 3 minutes early. I'm not sure how or when it happened but i grew up.

I've owned several 358Winchesters over the years and like the cartridge, but truth be told a 308 or 30-06 with heavy bullets will give the same results.

Just sayin'. :)
