Went out for a walk this morning at first light, lots of coyotes last night after dark.

250ish yds with a 69 gr smk, bullet entered right behind the shoulder but it went about 130 yds before lying down.20240330_063722.jpg

Not for lack of targets! Yesterday I left for work at 6am and saw 2 in the field. Phoned my wife to wake the boys as I didn't have time to stick around.

By the time they got up and out, there were 5 congregating.

Last night they were kicking up a ruckus and I watched them for a bit with the Sightmark Wraith I have.

Made sure to get out before light this morning and sure enough there were 2 of them in the field again.

I'm not good/fast enough to get both, as the second hightailed it at the shot.
 
It's a Rem 700 with a Benchmark barrel in .223 in a McMillan a5 stock. It's 18 lbs, heavy for tromping around in the snow. I've been using 69 gr sierra matchkings in it, although I'm wondering if I should try something else because the dog ran quite a way despite being shot through right behind the shoulders.

Or maybe I need to get better shot placement. The rifle is definitely capable of more precise shots.
 
You remember me complaining about that? I hadn't thought about him in months, life is good now. I couldn't walk from my house to my shop without a hassle when I lived in town, now I can walk to my shop and shoot predators along the way.

Two less coyotes howling this evening. 55gr fmj was the recipe that worked this evening after dinner.

V-max bullets tend to drop varmints where they stand. Buy some and see how they shoot. 58gr V-MAX in Superformance in my 243 drop coyotes at over 200 yards easily.

use soft points like the 55 grain sierras with varget

^^^ tried the 55 grains in my 243 with okay MOA's ish results out to 200 yards. Going to try the 58 grains to see if the results have improved.
