Hunting with a 45-70

I've never shot much past 100 yards with mine, all on moose my favorite is the woodliegh 400 @2000 usually find a good mushroomed bullet somewhere in it ,works great

That's the bullet I use in my 458wm at 2450fps. 400gr ppsn. Haven't used it on moose yet but good to know it's a solid performer

It's my favorite round ,45/70 for me is150 yard gun,I reload and I don't much care for hot loads,I like to shoot and be very accurrate, with handloads im losing a lot of fps ,but I gain in a nice comfortable ,deadly accurrate round that doesn't blow my deer or bear into burger.

With the right loads and sight in 275 yards is very doable .

An increase of 500 fps literally cuts drop in half, but with either load anything past 150 yards you would need to know the distance to place the bullet accurately. The good news is, when that slug arrives at its intended target it will do the job that is being asked of it, regardless of what the energy numbers on paper say.

I’ve got a Pedersoli Model 3514 which has taken Black Bear, Whitetail and Mule Deer out to 100 yards as I liked using it in heavier timber, but finally placed a Leupold 1x4 power illuminated reticle for more open country as my eye sight has diminished with age and peep sights in early morning light give me to much shadow. Like others have mentioned the 325 grain Hornady ammunition I use never needs a follow-up, and the sound of the round striking your game will assure you of its potential. You can see my WTS placed in January 2024 for what I’ve been using.

Favorite 45-70 load is with a 350 grain Hornady round nose bullet. Used to hunt gophers at a 100 yards for practise with it It's a great round to hunt with it.

I zero 3.5" high at 100. I run a peep sight and kill elk and moose. From 0-200yds. My hunting load ( 405 cast)is 11.5" low at 200

150 yd zero:

  • 1325 fps mv +5.9" @ 100 yd | -13.3" @ 200 yd
  • 1800 fps mv +3.0" @ 100 yd | -7.5" @ 200 yd
And both way steep drop off beyond ballistic reticle & rangefinder comes in handy.

Deer and bear I have shot with hard cast (effectively a solid) died quickly, with a good blood trail.

Not to derail this thread too much, but where were they hit? How did they respond, down and out, or dash and needed tracking? I ask because I am thinking of trying cast ww metal 285 gr semi-flat nose in my 9.3X62 for bear this Spring.

Loads are already developed, 2200 fps, less than two inch groups at 100 yards, and no leading.

Thanks,
Ted

Through the lungs, they are going to run, but they won't get far... under 50 yards for sure, and you won't need refined tracking skills.
