now, please excuse my ignorance, but not being a big game hunter ive always wondered if you shot say an elk or moose way out in the woods. how the hell do you get it back to your truck, which i guess could be many K's away..

i know some use quads with trailers, but how do you do it if alone and on foot...
 
ATV + trailer

On foot: you have to butcher the moose in quarters (or even smaller pieces, depends on distance to carry)
Going through the bush with heavy weight on your back is a real chore.

but here in AB the hunting regs say something like the animal must be whole until it is taken to the home of the hunter.. so surely you couldnt butcher it in the field...
 
I don't know that. But I do know that the regulations in Ontario say that you must do everything to recover the game. That should be the same in AB. Also, if the tag is properly attached, you shouldn't have a problem quartering especially when hunting alone - which I would not recommend for moose.
You need to check the AB hunting regulations what exactly they say.

BTW, we even butchered a calf last year and loaded the trailer right there on the spot where he fell less than 100 meters from the trail. (Tagged properly.) The ATV did the rest.

What some folks I know use, when they can quarter in the field. :D

Use a brand new one that has never had petroleum chain oil, and use vegetable oil for the chain oil. :)

In that case, use the cheapest one from Walmart because you'll have to throw it in the garbage after you finish. :D

No the regs don't say that. No such requirement, somewhere is steering you wrong.

This is a good place to ask questions though, you'll get good help here.

You cut an elk of moose in quaters and a chain saw can be handy.

You must leave evidence of ### on a quarter, that is what is required. So you don't skin the area around the nut sack, leaving them attached. FYI: ;eave a fair bit of skin around the sack, as gravity will pull and a small amount of skin
will give way.
 
if we cant get the quads in, we usually use a fold up pack cart. its a pain in the ass but it works out pretty handy.

ah, thats where i mis read it, i saw it must be left intact, i thought that meant the whole animal..

not that it matters as i dont plan on ever shooting anything bigger than a rabbit... just was interested on how it was done...

and if you ask about rabbits, my barbour wax shooting jacket has removable waterproof poachers pockets on the inside... lol

A little trick Patrick McManus once tried to get his elk carcass carried out was to call his friends together and then with great flourish pull out from his pocket a pill bottle with the words "HEART MEDICINE" printed on it in bold letters. The idea was that his friends would feel guilty and carry the elk out for him. Unfortunately, their response to his plight was advice to down all the pills at once, as they had other plans.

trust me, i wont. i just dont see the point. everyday there are literally 10's of deer on our land and i can easily get within 25 meters of them whilst walking my dog. i couldnt miss from there. so i dont see the point.. i have much more fun shooting gophers, and might get back into rabbit shooting as i used to do a lot in the UK.. and the deer are nice to look at from my house.. which cant be said for the bloody gophers digging up the horses fields!!!




plus i dont like the taste of deer..
