Hi I am considering joining the reserves & I would like to get some expeirience with the standard rifles so I will be ahead of the game.

In your CGN'r opinions what would be the closest rifle to the C7 or C8 ?

Appreciated, Thank you.

Id say basically any .223/5.56mm ar platform or even an XCR would be pretty similar. The only thing which you would need to get used to would be the recoil (not much) because besides that the only real thing youd have to get accustomed to would be the Elcan...

And C8s in the reserve are few and far between from what ive seen... atleast in my unit!

Id really say that any 21'' barrel in .223 would do the job, and dont forget your marksmanship principals :D

Personally the last thing I want is an AR, you're going to be seeing them day in and day out when your working and on your courses, the last thing I'd want to see after that is another AR , mix it up, get a CZ or something :p

Buy an AR15 with a flat top. If you want something that looks similar, get a 20".

Buy an ELCAN (http://www.elcan.com/ELCAN_Business_Areas/Sighting_Systems/Products/Day_Sights/SpecterOS34x.php). Visit Wolverine Supplies, iirc they carry ELCAN products. Bring $$$

Instead of wasting money on a C7 clone, I'd just buy a straight AR15. You can save some money and build something that better suits you. You don't need a full out C7 clone to remember your drills, just remember to set your sight back to 200m :p

What MOS are you looking at? What unit?

Check your facts. The standard barrel length is 20" not 21".

PeteL,

Re read the mans post. He's looking for something to enhance his training and provide an edge. He's not looking to "mix it up".

I never get tired of looking at ARs... hence mine and mines to come!

For my suggestion : any 20" AR with standard trigger, standard handguards, standard bird cage, fixed stock and the Elcan would be a boon. From pics I saw of guys in Afghanistan, mostly have Elcans. They don't seem to rely on irons as their primary sights.

Heck ask KevinB, I think he'll be one of the best to answer that matter.

The C7 in the picture you posted is actually not accurate. The CF never had a fully adjustable rear sight on the C7. It was only windage adjustable. The Triad was never issued with the C7 either. It came out with the C7A2. Furthermore, we stopped using those useless plactic mags a few years ago, and the Magpul is not provided by the CF. If you want to use them, you must purchase them yourself....just a little FYI for you.

Well shut my mouth. The real units haven't used them in a few years. Perhaps they have been relegated to training.....but that seems kind of peculiar. I am positive I've seen a tech message ref their total removal from the system......have to have a look tomorrow if I remember....

I don't recall seing plastic mags since 98 or 99.
We stopped using them on Ops way before. Did my first tour in '96 with alum mags and the guys had them before us, so as early as 93 or so

For those still using them: Your unit sucks! Train as we fight !!! :slap:

I know of a truck cab filled with thousands of them...the army took the time to smash the lips off almost everyone of them before disposal. With all the problems we had with those things, I would be very surprised to see them officially re-enter the picture. Maybe some RQ was cleaning out the back corners of the storeroom and found that missing shipment.

Unless he's involved with the new gunfighter program. The training he is likely to receive is crap. I'll state for the record that I have never been in. I have however observed many reg force and reserve types shoot, and they suck balls. How any reg or reserve force soldier can establish a proper cheek weld within the eye relief range of an Elcan is beyond me. With fixed stocks, very little eye relief, and body armour/LBG its impossible. The basics/fundamentals are the same regardless of a uniform.

After he has received training(good or bad) he can then practice those skills/drills on a civvie range in his own time. Seeing as how our military feels that steady live fire training is no longer a priority.

Ive never ever done ANY gunfighter EVER with an Elcan EVER. I dont think many others have unless their highers are Elcan anal.

And as for me saying its a 21'' barrel not a 20'' barrel... my bad... see i just use the things instead of looking at them on the internet. Ill come better prepared next time...:slap:

Damned. All he asked about was a configuration. Familiarity with a firearm isn't the same as "being a know-it-all". According to that BS statement the thousands of Civvie AR owners all have bad habits when it comes to AR's. The entire point is to learn. If they learn incorrectly or against military doctrine, they will be corrected you can be sure. It is just like the gentlemen in the EE asking for an AR platform to have his sons learn basics of operation and assembly/reassembly (here).

I play with my AR-15, I don't follow a routine maintenance schedule, yet I can fully tear down an AR and reassemble one. If they want to buy and AR to learn they kudos to them. I don't believe that you need to be ignorant of tools before you become officially trained on them.
How many people hunt and peck on their computer's keyboard because they have never taken a typing class?
How many people have changed their own vehicle oil or done their own brakes without any training?

Wanting to learn is a great reason for owning an AR as well as any other firearm. As long as they remember that Safety is #1, then more power to them.

I'm not trying to bust your balls. I figured it was a simple mistake.
