I have a Ruger No1 and can't get the scope back far enough for me, I have extension rings. Next step is shorten the length of pull or a long eye relief scope, the scope I have is a leupold vari x compact 3-9x32. What would be a good long eye relief scope?

Are you abnormally short? I had one, this didn’t come up. Shortening it would make it almost worthless for resale, if that concerns you.

That compact has a short tube body so limited in positioning, with eye relief similar to other scopes iirc?
also not known for the better optics, not near as good as a III
try another scope maybe

also maybe those extended rings are limiting the position, flip one around or add a standard maybe?
tough to say w/o out pics

The comment about the length of the scope is about correct. I hunted with a Ruger No.1A in 7x57 for about a dozen years - it had various Leupold scopes - I think at the end it had a Leupold M8-6x36 scope on it - with the rear ring as the Leupold offset ring. That got it back just fine for me to use. If it matters, I was very close to six feet tall - that rifle and scope seemed to fit to me just fine. I think I had tried other scopes, but their eye box for seeing through was just too short - I could not afford more expensive than a previously owned Leupold, which seemed to have about longest eye box, that I found. Seemed to work.

I have the same problem with the No1
Unless i use a long eye relief 1x4 or 1x6 LPVO type of scope I find myself creeping up the stock to get a good sight picture and it makes for awkward uncomfortable shooting

Burris timberline, nikon inline xr both have 5" eye relief. That's on lowest power. What magnification do you have it set at most?

If you really must keep this rifle, put a longer scope that can be moved more rearwards... it that does not work shorten the stock a little using a 1/2 inch decelerator pad.

I used one of these on my 450 bushmaster and Burris HD 2-10. It is a fairly short scope, so required some help, and the offset ruger rings did not allow for enough movement to align things. Purchased mine from Prophet, but there might be other Canadian retailers with them in stock. They have two models, one for the S/B model, and a different one for the Varmint models. The varmint models have split bases, so you can tell them easier.

Small caveat. I did have to shorten the screws that came with the new rail, as they bottomed out before making things tight, which I only saw on the 3 rd trip to the range, and scratching my head over why the scope seemed to shoot weird, but things seemed tight. The screws just jammed enough to not really move when I played with moving the scope to see if things were loose, and were bottoming out when I physically checked them after the 2nd range trip. Rail and scope moved under recoil, but not under my manhandling it.

Not sure why there’s such an aversion to cutting the stock. I’ve done it and done properly never affected resale. Love the No1 but like you they don’t fit great and the perfect scope can be elusive. Take the butt pad off and see how it fits, usually that’s enough and just cut that much off and re attach the pad which will need ground some.

As long as cutting the stock is done well I see no reason you wouldn't be able to sell it if you wanted. There are lots of gun owners out there that find the standard 13.5-14" LOP offered on most rifles to be too long.

That said, I'd start with looking for a different scope with a longer tube and/or more eye relief first.

This is what I'm going to do. I've got a #1 in 303 British that I adore. The LOP is perfect for me and it fits me as though it were made for me. That being said, the scope I have chosen to put on it is a Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36. I love the scope as well. I have several. But it has a relatively short tube. It's fine from 2.5 up to about 6.5. But once you zoom up to 8, the black ring around the ocular lens starts to show up. You can crane your neck forward and it'll go away. Or you can find a scope that fits the rifle better. I'm going to try the offset rings first. But, barring that, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a scope for it with a longer main tube. I'm sure I'll find another rifle for the 2.5-8x36 if I need to so it's not a big deal. However, I'd never cut my rifle down as it fits me so well. To each their own though. I hope you find a decent solution OP.
