What's your favourite powder for loading the .375 H&H (and why) ?

Bullet weights are 300 and 270 grain and the target is cape buffalo.

Comments on preferred bullet types would be welcome, too.

Reloder 15 or W760. 760 has been my go-to powder with 270 and 300 grain bullets for a long time, and has always been great for accuracy & velocity. Regards, Eagleye.

Powders that have a burning rate similar to 4350 do well.

If you take 300 gr TSX's you won't need any other bullet, it will perform well on your buff and any plains game you wish to take. If you intend to take a mono-solid find a 270 gr. The 300 gr mono-solids are the long side, and during penetration they might try to swap ends. A 270 gr solid at 2650 will probably exit a buffalo, so there is no advantage to the heavier bullet.

You should check out the accuratereloading forums for guys who actually have tons of firsthand experience on buff.

I think 300 grain solids over 4350 for about 2400-2500fps is a pretty traditional choice

With bullets in the 250gr - 300gr range I've been using IMR 4350. In that weight range I notice in the Sierra manual they list IMR 4064 as their go to powder for accuracy loads. It's on my must test list.

I've used 4350, 760, H414, Varget, RL15, and 47 SL in the .375. 77 grains of 760 or H414 with any bullet between 270 and 300 grains works great, 47SL needs 78 to get to the same spot. RL15 works with 270 grains better than 300 and usually gets the highest speeds.
I loaded 300 TSXs and Banded solids in the .375 as a back up buffalo rifle, but shot my buffalo with the .416. Judging by the way the solids whistle through a giraffe that is the size of 2 buffalos I wouldn't be using them for the first shot on buffalo. The chances of hitting 2 are too great. The 300 TSX exited a eland for me, you'd best be looking behind your buffalo with those as well. PHs are split between softs and solids for the follow-up, and all premium softs. Everyone I talked to wants a soft for the first shot.
Randy Brooks of Barnes Bullets swears by 270 grain TSXs for buffalo, and has killed more than most. The chances of the 270 solid shooting to the same POI is good. Swift A-frames have a flawless reputation for the big stuff too, and are a little easier to keep inside. This is one of the few times you don't want an exit hole.
I'm going back with 270 grain TSXs and Banded Solids in the .375, and 400 grain A-frames and Banded Solids in the .416.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards the 270gr TSX's, but have also received a strong recommendation for A-frames.

Can anyone comment on who's the best source for A-frames in Canada?

Russels is the only source of A-Frames I have found, 'course you only need one.
It's hard for a handloader and gun-nut to accept, but accuracy doesn't mean very much for a buffalo rifle. Bullets and reliability are everything. A lot of treasured doubles won't shoot minute of cowboy hat.
The average buffalo has 3 bullets in it, not counting insurance shots. One shot kills are something to celebrate in song and story. Hit 'em with everything you got, and hit 'em again. My buffalo took 3 .416s, though 2 would have done it, a guy I was hunting with lung-shot his with a .378 Weatherby in the evening, then 4 times in the morning with a .416. Boomer has a pretty good story about how a buffalo can soak it up.

rl 15 w/270 tsx is a great combo for me & Iwouldn't be afraid of using it for pretty much everything but ele . I have also used a butload of 47 sl with 300gr loads just because I have alot to use but think rel15 is great w/ 270gr

Tony d,
I liked 47 sl as well, til I ran out and couldn't get anymore. Thanks to Eagle-eye I now have one more 7 pound box to shoot up. I even took it to Africa the first time loaded under 270 grain TSXs.

Yes thats the poop I don't thinkI have ever found a better deal on a more versatile powder its great I might even cry when I finally run out Africa seriously gets in your blood doesn't it once you go you spend time every day thinking of the next time you are going back.I really like rl 15 but man i that stuff is so damn expensive especially when you use the big bores wish I could find a deal on 15or so pounds of it. ha ha

I doubt that a day goes by that I don't think about Africa. I'm leaving for my 4th safari in 2 years next July.
I haven't had quite the universal success with 47sl as you have, but it's been great in the .375. Not having to weigh charges for practice loads is a great side benefit, considering the amount I shoot the caliber.
The big bores sure do eat up the powder, don't they? I don't even get 70 shots out of a pound of powder with my .416 Rigby.
