9.3x62 or 9.3x57 rechambered to 9.3x74r

Hmmm the cartridges OAL is a lot longer than the other two… it is a rimmed case so I’m sure bolt face would have to be modified if it can be modified for it?!?!
What would be the reason for it?

The x74 is a long, tapered cartridge. I think you would have to set the barrel back considerably in order for it to clean up. The action itself would require a lot of modification to work with the rimmed cartridge.

NOPE. The 9.3x62 is a more suitable cartridge case for any bolt action rifle. And it is a well designed, capable chambering. As 9.3mauser wrote above, The 9.3x74 is too long, the long gradual taper won't allow the chamber of a 9.3x62 or 9.3x57 chamber to clean up without shortening the chamber end of the barrel and setting it back and re-cutting the threads. Then you'd have to make the action fit the too-long cartridge, and modify the extractor and magazine which is unlikely to work as expected. You could make a single shot on those actions, but it would still be a silly and difficult choice.

The easiest route to the most power with the least expense is rechambering to the 9.3X64. 286-300 gr bullets at 2600 fps is nothing to sneeze at.

The downside is the brass is only available from RWS, and is not easily reformed from other cartridge cases.

Intersurplus often has 9.3 x 62 brass from PPU; I also form it from 30-06 brass; you need to trim the 30-06 reforms, and the first load fire-forms the shoulders.

Lube the 30-06 well before sizing and be prepared for a scrap rate of 5-10%. Lower if you anneal. I am currently using 286 gr PPU RNSP bullets.

I love the calibre, very accurate and very substantial.

I have never needed to trim 30-06 brass after reforming to 9.3X62. Probably because I anneal it first, then neck it up to 40 caliber before resizing to crush fit the particular rifle it will be used in.
