So, we can be very confident that there is a very, very small although never 0% chance that you can pick up a spongiform transmissible encephalopathy from eating CWD affected deer.
What remains to be seen is what happens if a CWD affected deer bites you.
With that in mind, Dosing is right, we better start taking this seriously
For real though, Steven Rinella had a great bit on the Meateater Podcast where he said he'd like to cook a burger for anyone who says picking up a sickness from CWD affected deer is impossible. A burger made from a few visibly very badly affected deer, ground together and cooked rare to medium rare, and see who would be willing to eat it lol

This stuff scares me. Not the "bitten by a zombie deer" part, but rather the catching the "prion death sentence" part. I wonder if they can come up with a quick field test kit for CWD. BEFORE you get your tools and hands covered with deer bits.

Limitations of testing being what they are, it cannot be confirmed that it is a result of CWD. But, the disease that would be the result of CWD infecting a human has turned up in two people in the same lodge.
The odds of anyone contracting CJD is one in a million. What do you figure the odds are that two hunters from the same lodge get it at exactly the same time? One in how many trillion?
Considering how many tons and tons and tons of beef from cows infected with mad cow were sold on the British market in the 80s and 90s for "only" 176 people to contract CJD, would say this tracks. The odds against it are quite tiny, but if it happens, you are quite dead. If I remember right, all we are really counting on is an N amino acid in a particular part of a protein beta loop.
Not seeing the "sky is falling" panic yet, but the idea that this is potentially a result of CWD stands to reason.

This is WHY YOU COOK BEAR MEAT. TO KILL THE BUGS IT HAS IN IT. Don't cook any type of meat that is tainted will , or could be your last!

I was gonna say something about how if 29 million Canadians get a vaccine, and some of them develop a disease that affects 1 in a million people, we're supposed to be surprised? Call me when 2 people in the same small circle get it at the same time.
But nevermind.
I'll get a booster every time you eat a deer suffering from advanced CWD, we can see who gets CJD first.

The problem is that prions are not alive to begin with, so they cannot be killed. They are misfolded proteins that can induce other protein to misfold, completely destroying their function in the body. Anything short of complete incineration won't even be enough to denature them.
