702 plinkster 25rd mags

It seems that the RCMP has decided that the mag should be limited to 10 rounds for the Mossberg 702 plinkster because of a pistol (the Mossberg 715P). I don't remember reading this on CGN, and I see stores still selling 25 rounds mags.

I thought that only the Ruger 10/22 had a problem with a pistol variant.

Did I really miss that info or is it new?

observed serial numbers consisted of a three letter "EGC" prefix and six numbers.

Canadian Law Comments

there is a 25 shot magazine available for this Model firearm.

this firearm Model is manufactured in both rifle and handgun configurations. The magazine is interchangeable between the two configurations and is considered a"handgun" magazine. Because handguns are limited to a ten shot magazine capacity in accordance with the CC PART III, S. 84, Regulations PART 4 Para 3. (1) (b) "The Former Cartridge Magazine Control Regulations", this limits the magazine capacity for the rifle configuration to ten (10) shots, despite the firearm being designed to userim-fire ammunition.

Interested to know more on this 25 rd Mag issue as I too have a Mossberg (Blaze) with said magazines.

I often tell myself it's ok due to this quote from the RCMP:

Maximum permitted magazine capacity
Any magazine that exceeds the maximum permitted capacity as described in the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted, is a prohibited device.

Businesses can possess prohibited devices, if appropriately licensed. Individuals may not possess prohibited devices.

As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic, centre-fire long gun
10 cartridges for most handgun magazines
Possession of a large capacity magazine that has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law, is legal in Canada. The Criminal Code Regulations describe acceptable ways to alter a magazine. It is illegal to import unaltered large capacity magazines.

With some exceptions, there is no limit to the magazine capacity for:

semi-automatic, rim-fire long guns
other long guns that are not semi-automatics

So I can't tell for sure until big brother advises us so....

The Ruger 10/22 mag has the same issue but UNTIL that is dealt with in court IMO it isnt real. You can still purchase larger mags in store, and handguns are illegal to transfer now so it is a non-issue even if there are more than 20 in country.

The RCMP can issue as many interpretations as they like, but the Regulations state rimfire magazines are exempt. A lawyer who is even half aggressive will make the Crown see there is no case.

Where can you buy a 10/22 mag with more than 10 rounds? All the butler creek I've seen are pinned to 10.

Wow it's not often I run into people who agree that the LAR-15 "pistol" magazine is a total sham and should be pinned to 5 as per the regulations if the LAR-15 "pistol" isn't commonly available.

Rimfire magazines are exempt from being limited to 5 from the 3 (1)(a) semiautomatic firearm magazines, but not limited to 10 from 3(1) (b) semiautomatic handgun magazines.
