The "Age Old Advice" with slugs and bears is to use Brenneke Slugs ONLY. That slug (and only that slug) is designed from the ground up to penetrate, they do cost the earth but I have heard (from people who've used them - and I've seen proof) that they do work wonders.

I'm no zoologist, but I gotta think a black bear's prolly a little less dense than a wall of wet clay.
As you prolly know deer are successfuly hunted with slugs in much of Southern Ontario. Again I'm no zoologist, but a 280lb buck can't be too, too different from a 240lb black bear from a 12ga slug's point of view?

Well, speaking as a former vet tech, I can guarantee you that bone is a LOT more dense than wet clay, or at least that's what the burning smell used to tell me as we killed drill bits in surgery... And a bear has some HEAVY bones compared to flimsy critters like deer or people...

I had a buddy who got shot in the hand with a ,410 on Friday and was home on Saturday with a bandage and splinterd bone. It did not go through and about 25 pieces of lead shavings were taken out.
First question: Are you actually serious?
Second Question: You said tyou might shoot a few pheasants or something.

1-I never said I wanted a .410 for bears. I wanted a Tamer 20ga. In my first post I said that I saw the little Boito and took a look at it as I had never seen one before, NOT FOR BEARS, but curiosity. When I asked my buddy how he thought it would do with slugs the sales dude chimed in with his " you'll blow up the gun" comment. When someone brought up the idea that .410 was useless on a bear I said that a .410 into a bear's face would probably turn him off his course. I may be wrong, but that is irrelevant as I already have another 20ga and a 12ga so why would I buy a .410 for bears?
2- Not sure on the pheasant season. I'd have to check my booklet. I had it with me in camp but never got around to looking at it. Too busy looking for firewood.

Yes you can shoot a .44 out of a .410 and I know of at least one gun that is marked for .410 or .45 LC, but there is nothing same as about it, unless you mean they both go bang

Generally a bear is shot (for defensive purposes) from the front. Given that people usually shoot at the threat (bad guys tend to get shot in their gun hand) we can assume that when threatened by a charging bear, we'll shoot it in the upper frontal region. A bear's skull is incredibly thick in the frontal skull. Shooting a buck on the other hand is best done from the side, there are few heavy bones presented from the side, and no bones on a buck as thick as the frontal skull of a black bear.
I suppose they'd work, if you caught smokey right in the eye. So long as he wasn't blinking at that exact moment, anyway. Personally, I don't venture into bear country without an old fashioned doomsday device.

Gotta love it. A thread starts, and the original poster wants to talk about...doesn't even matter what he wanted to talk about. By the bottom of the first page it's a debate on whether bears should be fended off with .22's, SKS's or .410 slugs. Pages and pages ensue!! I couldn't even read them all. At one point the bears have guns!

I think it's because we all wake up screaming at least once per week, terrified of the bears that are out there, running around with no registration.
At least, that's what it is for me...
Maybe I'm unique in this regard...?
