Just got my SKS and don't know what I got myself into

It's a type 56 I got off the EE... it is brand new, never been fired and covered in goo. I read you need to clean all that stuff off with brake cleaner before using the gun. Do I have to totally dissasemble the gun and clean every little part? I just found a step by step online and it has about 50 steps, so I am a little unnerved.

I bought a couple of cases of the corrosive czech ammo for this gun that haven't arrived yet...do I have to completely take the gun apart after every time I shoot it? I've heard people pour boiling water down the bore, or use windex or ???

firstly, relax, it aint complicated , unless you make it so.

secondly, yes, you need to totally dismantle, while doing that , inspect every piece for defect, hopefully there is none but this would be the best time to find out, also study how the SKS was put together and how it works mechanically.

thirdly , use your old charge card (or your wifes current card, haha) to scrape off the excess cosmo then start cleaning, there are several methods, i like using plain old solvent.

clean it real good esp in the trigger group and bolt area, yes, must disassemble the bolt completely, i use q-tips to clean where the firing pin goes.

once you done that, then cleaning after every shoot with hot water is a piece of cake....have fun.

I dissasembled the whole gun, and cleaned the hell out of it, the dissasembly was a piece of cake so I'm not worried about that anymore:p and am soaking the gas tube, trigger group and the bolt. I can't figure out how to take the bolt apart though and the link in the sticky didn't detail that
 
I'm pretty sure there are youtube vids also.

It ain't hard.

Oh don't forget to put the safety lever on SAFE! Or the trigger assembly will not come out. :D

Do NOT totally dismantle the trigger group unless you're sure you know what you're doing. You can clean that well enough without taking it apart.

The rest of the weapon is pretty simple but one thing to be sure and do is take the bolt apart. I have personally seen several slam fires caused by grease sticking the firing pin forward.

The field strip can be done under a minute once you memorize it, don't try to take the trigger assembly appart, they're a real ##### to put back together again. Eveything else is just big hunking pieces of metal that can only go one way. I never took my bolt appart, just soaked it in break cleaner for about 2 days then shooked dry and lubed liberally, never had a problem with the gun.

Pour Hot Water or Swab out with Windex before Cleaning the Bore is a necessity
when shooting corrosive Ammunition. The Powder itself is not corrosive but the Primer is because of the Salts used in their Manufacturing.
Special attention is needed on the Yugo model SKS as the Bore is not Chrome lined and will corrode and rust quickly if not cared for properly.
Even though it is not really necessary I always disassemble the Rifle after shooting for a complete cleaning and coat the Bore with Gun Oil for added protection before I put it away.
Most Sporting good Shops sell a very good rust inhibitor fore Firearms that You just wipe on the Metal Parts, I use it every time and have never had a hint of rust on My Firearms.
 
My rule of thumb is if I can still smell the gun powder residues on the firearm, and related parts then it isn't clean enough.
 
Make sure you check the gas system every once and a while too... Make sure you're cleaning that as well because it can build up with corrosion too if you're not on top of it.

I predict that you will be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to strip and clean your SKS. Don't forget that it was designed to be maintained by illiterate commie peasant conscripts. It really is a breeze to work on.
 
I pulled the bolt apart and cleaned it out with brake cleaner, then put the whole thing together no problem. I sprayed gun conditioner over all parts and wiped off so now its lubricated and protected. It is really easy I have found out. I just got unnerved when I saw the step by step with 52 steps. I probably took it apart right to the bolt apart and put it back together within 10 minutes. Didn't clean out the bore yet, because I am waiting for my ammo to come. Should I clean that out before shooting?

yes, clean the bore before shooting.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention when using iron sight, make sure its set at the proper range and not slide all the way back , all the way back is the battle range.
