Opinions on semi auto hunting rifle?

If you can find one, the HK770(308)/940(3006) are my favourite.

Also really like the HKSL7 but the sub 18" barrel sadly makes it restricted.

I like my Benelli R1 in 308, surprisingly accurate, can actually take it apart to clean it easy too.
Don't think I'd like an AR style for hunting, they are cool but don't carry great. M14's were pretty decent and accurate until the ban hammer.

The powers that be are afraid of scary black rifles. As far as hunting goes semi autos are fine. AR style rifles are lacking in balance and portability regardless of government BS. A Remington 742 or Winchester 100 or Browning BAR is a good choice imo.

If thats the case with the R1, that its easy to strip and clean, thats cool!

That was my favorite thing about military rifles like the 14, etc. More robust than a civy hunting rifle and easier to maintain. Taking stuff like a semi auto Remington apart blows.

Bolts are better at chambering ammo that isn't factory spec - say a shoulder isn't pushed back quite enough - a bolt will chamber it with a little more push - where a pump or semi might not work right.

It is easy to forget that everyone hunts differently - stand hunting is very different than doing drives with a good shooter or two waiting for running deer - in which case, a semi would be just wonderful. In the flatlands, accuracy at long range might eliminate many semis.

Back in the day, a lever could slip into the front of the bench-seat seat cover (remember those?) - and slide out so easily - I dream of a modern slim short semi rifle that could replace the old 30 30 - the AR has too many catchy places.

Let me dream for a minute - a .243 with a tube magazine that can be loaded and unloaded easily ( and ammo added to) - slim enough to wrap a gloved hand around for easy carry ( not like bolt actions) - semi auto with a top three-position safety - total length same as model 94 - combination of notch rear sight with peep sight alternative for long range. Hooded front sight. Super-bright LED light in front of tube mag. Maybe removable scope that stores in stock. Balance point of carry is not steel ( too cold on hand in hunting season.) Durable and trustworthy - stainless with black finish. Might have a retractable cord sling coming out of stock to clip to fore-end. Might have a ring at balance point to attach to belt or chest. Should hold five rounds at least ( plugged like shotgun?) plus another five in stock. It has to slip into a sock and out easily - no snags. Price point 2000$.

Wrong calibre and a few other missing specs for your dream gun, but the RDB C is definitely streamlined and compact with folding iron sights.

I think the reason AR's are so popular down south as they are a do all platform from home defence to hunting and very modular.

If Canada was not so restrictive we would likely see a shift towards AR's for people that don't want to own many different rifles.

It's not like the AR is a new rifle at this point being around for well over 50 years now.

I got my pal like 2 months ago so no I don't remember any of what you are talking about. I bought a bolt rifle and wanted something also a bit more fun but I don't want something that's useless except at the range so atleast if I could use it for hunting sometimes also then it's worth it to get. Once again me not knowing anything really about it I am asking others if there's downsides here that make this not make sense or a stupid idea.

Buy a Ruger 10/22. Cheap ammo and it'll satisfy your semi-auto crave, you can use it on small game too. Use your bolt action for big game hunting.

If only... A civie legal G3 with the looks of a Gewehr 43. Be still my beating heart. Shame HK phased 'em out.

Agreed. There would be a solid market for them. HK came out with so much awesomeness in the 70s and 80s.
