What to do if you are leaving the country?

when i left....I had to surrender my (mostly stripped) ARs to the local police department.

I was able to sell my handguns before the ban came into effect

I called multiple shops....none of them were interested in the ARs at the time, even for free

Most likely because of the "mostly stripped" part. That's likely to be the case today just the same. Complete ARs are being bought.

When you say mostly stripped what did you have to turn in and what could you take.
I'm hoping to leave in the near future,as soon as my green card is aprouved, and would like to know.
I know no chinese or russian guns and no ar's or 'merican garands etc.

why not ask the ATF? (imports@atf.gov)

the interesting thing I found out recently is that you _can_ bring the guns in later and still avoid the importer engraving

I did fill out the form 6.I actually filled 2 of them and both were rejected because of errors in filling them out.
It is frustrating because you spend hours pouring over the forms and they get rejected for some stupid reason.
You do get an email offering help and a phone # to call.

I'll be doing it again when my G.C. is near.
With the ATF rules chznge all the time so it's hard to get a form accepted.

You should take them up on that help offer - they will walk you through, saving you all kinds of time and trouble. It also gives you a chance to elaborate and get something allowed that would otherwise be rejected (e.g. M1 carbines - most are rejected as they can accept FA components but latter commercial versions can't so they are allowed through but you have to point it out)
