Guys, something inside me, an i hate it when this happens.... is telling me (yelling at me) to look down the 7SAUM route in a Model 7 rifle...............

Now, i already own a Kimber 7mm08 , its light an its awesome,

ive come to ask the techxperts their opinion on why one would go the 7saum over the 7mm08?

Im liking the 7saum in a 22 inch barrel, the model 7 should be fairly light..........

have had a 7 Rem mag before an didnt like it, i only shoot to 400 and 500 maximum ever. was doin gongs and trying 400m shots but figured the 708 could do the same sorta thing at that distance with a few more clicks.

so let me hear it!

Why go down the SAUM route? or why even bother?

Definitely go exclusively to the 7 SAUM, for general unavailability of brass and an insignificant improvement in ballistics. I ditched the 300 SAUM about a decade ago as it was on its way out and my .308 and 30-06 had the caliber covered.

250 fps more velocity, SAUM will have an edge for when reaching way out there. In the world of cartridge choices and comparisons, 250 fps is significant. If it wasn't, then a good shooter with a 7-30 Waters can do almost anything a 7 STW can do in the field...

7-08 has less recoil in same weight rifles, which is a good thing

The difference between a 7Rem Mag and a 7SAUM isn't a lot. What didn't you like about the Rem Mag? If it was recoil, I don't think you're going to do much better with a SAUM in a model 7...

How is brass availability for 7SAUM in your side of the world? Any reason you'd pick SAUM over the 7WSM? What about 280ai? You could get another Kimber in 280ai...

It's more velocity. That's about the only plus. I have a 7 saum, couple of 7mm-08's and a 7mm-08 AI. Downside is much, much harder to come by the brass (for the saum). Recoil is stiffer in the same platform. - dan

ADG sells 7 SAUM brass...its a great cartridge, I'm getting +2900 fps with 175 ELDX's and excellent accuracy. 24" barrel

I have owned lots of 7-08s and currently have 2 - I have owned 2 7 R saums and it’s a lot more POWER cartridge then the 7-08 is !
But it burns a Bunch more powder and has a bunch more recoil too . BUT for Killing game from 300 yards and out - it’s out perform the 7-08 significantly .

A 284Win is a great upgrade over a 7-08 if it’s in a std lenght action such as a Tikka T3X gotta get the COAL lenght extended out .

If you can’t decide split the difference and go .284 as recommended by Jim above. It’s pretty well the perfect general hunting cartridge, but it really belongs in a LA throated long so it can exit puberty and become its adult form.

Had I adopted it as I oft considered but never did, I have no doubt it’d still be here as it straddles a goldilocks zone of well cut compromises.

Yeah guys cheers.
its more of a wanter than a needer- in saying this i rekon boring my 7mm08 out to 284 win would be a better scenerio, brass availability mentioned above all else.

i didnt like the Rem mag because it was a handful, it had a long barrel (saum has 22) and for shooting say 400m, there wasnt much it would do over the 7mm08 except hit the target a little harder? but at the cost of each shot (much more grains of powder) all of this was an easy choice to sell it off.

i wont be going down the 7 saum, its a good price at $1500 for a stainelss model 7 but he wants $400 for the brass and i think the dies he had with it, moving it to a 2k rifle minus a scope....... no justify here.

i would contemplate moving the Whelen on for a saum but would be better of moving the Whelen and funding the rebore for 284 setup...... but like Ardent, its down the track if anything.

I did/would shoot 120-140 gr bullets in the 7-08...loved it and will probably own one again. I also own a 7 saum, shoot 160 Accubonds (factory) out of it and plan to reload 160-175's.

My rifle platforms were different- Kimber Montana in the 7-08 (since sold) is light and quick handling rifle, under 6 pds total. My 7 saum is a full custom, Manners EH1, 22" Proof Barrel, Defiance Machine xm action (total weight 8.5pds) was built for longer range stuff, 400-700 yards. I know 2.5 pds is alot more to carry around, but the saum is so much nicer/easier to shoot longer distances.

If I was planning to hunt mostly bush I would grab my 7-08. If i am planning more open country i grab my 7 saum.

I would own both if I were you. ;)

Agree. I built my 284 on a Rem 600, was my first goat gun. Wanted trim and lightweight. Trimmed the receiver slightly and extended the mag box by cutting and welding (this was long before extended mags were available). It's a great cartridge, basically natural short action 280. - dan

With the 284 cartridge it all depends what you want to do with it imo. If you want to shoot long high bc bullets, a long action is the way to go. However for a lightweight rifle with lighter bullets a short action might be the ticket. Apparently built on a short action M70 or a Rem you can get just over 3" coal. I have a browning micro 284 that max coal is 2.800" and Iv'e shot up to 150 gr sierra mk bullets and 154 gr hornady interlocks. I usually shoot 140 gr bullets. If I was to build a 284 I would opt for a 24" barrel to get the most out of it. The 284 is an excellent cartridge.

Mine is a 23 inch shilen, and the extended mag box let's me load out to 3.2", depending on the bullet. - dan

That sounds nice Dan, how much does it weigh? If memory serves me correctly, I was getting 2900 fps with 54 grains of RL17 and 154 gr hornady btsp bullets from a 20" barrel. It's been a few years since I've hunted with it however next season it will be coming out.
