Refinishing Stocks

I have a rifle stock with a bad case of the uglies.It has a very uneven staining of walnut on it that I would like to remove.How do I get the stain out of the checkering?I've heard that it can be done with bleach.Help.Thanks in advance.

the birchwood casey's refinishing kit come with all you need and instructions. i've used it a number times and it works quite well. IMHO
 
If the wood is stained and has another finish over it, try furniture stripper from the hardware store and chances are that both the finish and the stain will come of together. For the checkering, use a toothrbrush with the stripper and just keep at it until is clean. You'll need to brush the checkering wet and then let it dry and brush the "flakes" off. And repeat.

If it is just stained without a finish on top, then I'm not sure. If its a water based stain just try cleaning it off with some water. Might work. Or just stain it really dark over top...

X2. This has worked for me on more than a few rifle stocks. I have had good results with paint/varnish stripper named "circa 1850". It can take several applications.

Get the Circa 1850 stripper (great stuff), get enough thin poly to wrap around the stock at least 1 1/2 times. Coat the stock with the stripper (Thick), wrap in the poly, wait 20 minutes or so, unwrap, use a soft scraper to remove the bulk of the stripped finish and wipe with Xylene or Lacquer solvent to remove the residue. Sand any dirty spots and re-stain with color of choice. Use a few coats of Lacquer, Polyurethane or Tung oil to finish.
 
If the stain is soaked into the wood fibre, then you will have a challenge in front of you. The furniture strippers will remove some, but there will still be some residual. The bleach you refer to is wood bleach, available at specialty stores. I've tried it, didnt seem to do much...
As checkering exposed the end fibre, it will absorb more stain than other parts of the stock, making removal more difficult.
