30-06 ammunition for Moose

This thread is way off topic, we all know a 30-96 180 soft point will knock over a Moose inside 150 yards depending on shot placement.

The whole point was discussing how to educate newer hunters on the finer points of ammunition selection for various applications.

They don't teach about caliber and ammunition during any of the REQUIRED courses that allow you to hunt.

It may shoot fine in other rifles, but mine performs better with a different brand, load and bullet type

I have yet to shoot a moose, but I've been real close. The 15 day spike season here is rough and limited entry odd are rare.

I carry a Sako AV .375 h&h for the few times I can get out during the 2 weeks. I also have 2 30/06's and a 7mm RM. Those would also work perfectly. I'm sure my normal go to deer rifle in modern 6.5x55 would also work. My dad shot tons of moose with that 7mm rem mag with mixed brand 150-175gr cup and core and it always worked well. My good friend killed his first moose with a 165gr SST with an '06. They don't seem that hard to kill if they don't know it's coming.

I know my moose gun is overkill, but I always wanted one and used it as an excuse to buy a new rifle. I'm sure some of you feel me.

I was not referring to the picture on the front of the box, but rather the animals listed under "usage". I don't know about the current winchester ammo, but I know they used to show the "usage" pictures on the old SuperX boxes.

And if you're just being cheeky, congrats on repeating a joke that was already made...

Hell yeah! I know my 7mm08 will kill a moose just fine, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to buy something thats greater than 30cal to call my moose gun!

Why can I not find any 30-06 ammunition packages with a picture of a Moose or the word Moose.
I see plenty with Deer, Elk, Bear...but no Moose.
Is there a reason or that.

Is 30-06 not suggested for Moose any longer ?

Do we need a 300 Win. Mag now after all these years ?

I like handloads with 180gr Partitions for moose in the 30-06. Mind you, I'd shoot damn near anything with a 30-06 and 180gr Partitions. If I couldn't get handloads, say if I flew somewhere for a hunt and my ammo was waylaid, I'd try to buy some Federal Premium 180gr Partition ammo.
 
My first 2 moose were with a .243 Win. Then a 6.5x57, 25-06, 7mm-08, .338-06. The .243 worked just fine as did the others and the .338-06 didn't do it any better. Our moose are not particularly hard to kill. Even a 30-06 can do it.

I remember years back you did a couple 7600 triggers for me and i remember your moose hunting stories with the 708 :cheers:
 
Moose are not hard to kill. The 30-06 is plenty.

Many years ago up here a fellow from Watson Lake killed a huge moose that had a seventy inch-plus antlers spread using his ancient 30-30 Model 94. Can't remember whether it was two or three shots, but they were in the lungs and the moose went to the freezer.

If they had the will to live of a whitetail deer, we would be hunting them with 375 H&H and more powerful.

Over 70 replies and none address the issue I initially was trying to put forward regarding education of new hunters with respect to ammunition, types of bullets, caliber ballistics etc.
