I have an older M92, was rebarrelled 1949 into 218 Bee.
Some super hero before me utilized the factory buckhorns.

My eyes need a good peep site in the rear. Want to avoid a tang site if possible. Wondering what you Winchester enthusiasts recommend for a walking around varmint rifle?
I just wish to thread the needle maximum 100 yards or close to it is my desire for its future. Prefer old school type of site.
Yeah. A drill and tap for sure.

If it was me, I'd get a Skinner, and have the top of the receiver drilled/tapped by a smith or machinist. There is enough "meat" on either side of the bolt to do this, and it's a way cleaner look than the side-mount options, and doesn't interfere with carrying or snag branches.

Those Skinners are nice sites, but that old style climber looks a lot more appropriate on an old, classic rifle.

Drilling and tapping of old rifles in original condition is the bubba work of unwashed philistines. :)

Agreed sort of. If I was going to outfit an Angle Eject 94 Big Bore or a Timber carbine, I could be convinced to outfit a Skinner.
But this circa 1900 M92, with a 1949 barrel in 218 Bee & half mag, straight grip & shotgun butt stock, I think I much prefer an older style of sight.
Maybe a Lyman 66a or a Redfield 102 could fall into this genre too??
 
To me there is little collector value due to rebarrel so put whatever sight you like most on it. Older Lyman or Redfield steel receiver sights look good, sight acquisition is fast and accuracy much better than issue open sights due to longer sight radius mostly.

I can understand that. I have to do something constructive. No. It was never a collector thing. I know it's value.
Presently with its factory buckhorn sights its a little high at 15 yards and seemingly spot on at 40 yards. The ramp elevator is maxed out. It should be 100 yard capable.

Supercub, The 21 sight will also require dirlling/tapping. I guess the difference is that it's period-correct. For me they're cumbersome - then again, I'd be hunting with it, not doing CAS, etc.

Brutus, I've never used a 21, but my 94 and 86 both have lyman 66-style sights (one is a williams), and I really don't like them very much. Thy work fine but detract from the quick and easy handling, which is what makes Winchesters so great. They snag on things, and cause problems when hunting in wet conditions (moisture under the sight base).

Here's another option to consider. Buy yourself a spare breech bolt, and drill/tap it to take a skinner (they make a sight like this). Then, you can return the gun to original condition by just putting the old bolt back in. Just a thought
