I picked up these "seconds" and plan on shooting them out of my Henry Big Boy 45 Colt. Was curious as to who made them. I'm at the stage in my reloading that I like to use the bullet manufacturer's data over the powder data (i.e. if using a Sierra bullet I'd use Sierra's data with say IMR4227 instead of Hodgdon's data for the IMR4227 and a non-Sierra bullet of the same weight and type).

225 gr, 0.452" dia, jacketed hollow points.

Does not appear to be Nosler, Speer, Hornady, or Sierra.

Thanks!

***** I believe it is solved. Sierra 225 gr Sports Master. Looks like Sierra does not sell/list these bullets separately, or show them in their reloading manual *****

Maybe my Google skills need improvement but searching for Winchester 225 grain 45 colt bullets shows their Defender line, which is totally different. On my phone so will investigate Winchester bulllets tomorrow.

Thx!

Google does show Sierra ammo in 225 gr. I have some older 240 gr that doesn't have the "dimple" lines compared to what's on the Sierra website and look a lot like the pic you shared. Maybe from their ammo line?

The only 225 grain .452 component bullet I have ever seen from Winchester is the Silvertip. Not to say they never made another one, but since it seems impossible to find anything online I'm guessing that isn't it. I found a photo that looks like the same bullet loaded by a boutique ammo manufacturer but the website is 403 when you click on it.

Interesting. When I was on Sierra's website and looking through my Sierra manual they do not show the 225 grain bullet available, but you are 100% correct - Sierra does sell full cartridges loaded with 225gr "Sports Master™ Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) bullets."

I bet this is it. I'll mark it as "solved". Thank you!

I wonder if they would be good for deer hunting..... I currently use Hornady 250 gr XTP loading to T/C pressures in my Henry (yes, I called Henry and they said the T/C +P 45 Colt cartridges are fine in my Big Boy).

TC loads are max 30k PSI. Not exactly an engineering challenge. I would expect much more expansion and possibly fragmentation compared to an XTP with that bullet loaded hot and shot from a rifle.

I called Sierra and talked with a tech person. Was told that they are good for deer sized game at 1500 ft/s to about 700 ft/s. I straight-wall deer hunt in Michigan with my 45 Colt so I think I'm good.

Did load up a batch and shoot them at the range this weekend. Not accurate at all with Alliant 2400 powder (loaded to T/C levels). Will load up a few more with different powders and see how good they are.

Interesting that the Hornady 250gr loves the 2400 powder but the Sierra 225gr does not. Obviously slightly different bullet profiles, but would have not expected so much difference.
